Warning: Car is overheating - Pull Over and Call BMW Assist!

I got this warning message on Monday and I pulled over for 5 minutes and drove off (my house was less than a mile away) without the warning sign come back on. Car is 2007 X5 3.0 Si 81k miles

Today I dropped off the car at my local shop. I live in NY and I have a non BMW warranty called "Auto Source" (NJ Company). My warranty apparently covers water pump failures.

Question:

1. How does the shop perform a diagnostic on the water pump?

2. Should I take it to a dealer to have the work done instead of this indy shop?

3. Should I pay extra to have the thermostat replaced (hopefully only for part costs)?

4. Are there any other parts that I should have replaced while they change the water pump?

5. I have the lite version of BMWhatt - is there a code to look out for, for this waterpump failure?

Thanks!!

on older BMW engines (M52, M54) the stat fails open, so the engine wouldn't heat up as opposed to overheating. i can't see why they would change that. having said that, the stat is only like $30 or so.

Thermostat for this car is about $100 and it looks like it is also a pain to change. If I were to change thermostat, I would might as well do the water pump also..

Has anyone heard about or know about a "secret warranty" that BMW has for these water pump repairs? I read about this on another forum, but couldn't get any more information about.

My warranty company (Auto source) is covering my water pump replacement costs. The catch is that they are only paying $230 for an AM waterpump from worldpac, and my shop doesn't want to use AM parts.... They are also only paying for 3.5 hours worth of labor.

At the end of the day, I think i'll have to cover around $400+ of the costs...

I recently changed my electric water pump, which I think your car has also, you can do a quick check by openning the coolant reservoir when the engine is cold..whiles holding the gas peddle down, putting the car key in aux, wait 10 seconds and the water pump should start pumping, you will see it in the reservoir.

Thanks! I didn't get to do this, but this is good to know!

The shop started the water pump replacement today (hopefully), I brought them the Pierburg water pump that I got for $360 shipped from Amazon.

Got the car back yesterday. Shop ended up changing the thermostat and 2 other hoses. They charged an extra hour for labor for the thermostat.

Overall, I still ended up shelling out $400 from my pocket. My warranty company only covered after market parts... SMH... So they covered $281 for labor and $320 for water pump..

Up here in the North, water pump, therm. and labour is about $1000. I assume is probably close in the states, so you still saved yourself some money. I would have also replaced the expansion tank. That is just me though...
