Could this be my water pump?

Hey guys I just recently noticed this odd noise only idle (sometimes - not all the time)
2007 e70 x5 4.8 126km
car runs perfectly. No issues. No lights on.
It seems like it's coming mostly from the front of the vehicles but had for me to pinpoint it.
I've attached a video:

any help would be appreciated.

Yeah man. That pully that's bouncing around is the water pump. You should replace that before the plastic fins start breaking off inside. Don't forget new thermostat and hoses while your at it.

My water pump recently went. 2 days before I need to take a 2300 mile road trip I started the vehicle and heard a slight knocking that was not normal. Figured it might have been an idler pulley bearing, but decided to by a water pump and pulley as well.

Chanced it and drove the 2300 miles, things got worse over the trip but luckily held together.

Easy thing to do, pull belts, then rotate pump and pulleys, the problem will be obvious once you have the belts off.

Seems that the pump seal starts to seep and will then contaminate the pump bearing and then the bearing cage breaks and the pump can get very noisy. At least this is what happened in my case and around 78k miles on my 2008 a in August.

Suggest the following.

Replace pump and pump pulley. The pulley is plastic and may be rusted on the pump, not worth chancing it for the $15-$20 IMHO.

I was able to remove the pump without removing the crank pulley, but if you have big hands and are not very patient, then remove the crank pulley.

Suggest installing a Bimmer Fix | Coolant Pipe Repair System coolant stent while the pump is out. Well worth the extra time and money IMHO.

Also suggest a Hamburg Tech 90C thermostat. Have been running one in my car for almost a year. Did get an error for the engine temp once, but the stat became soft in under a year and warranted the stat via ECS Tuning.

I took it today to my mechanic. Not sure if he was too busy or what but he had one of those stethoscopes and had a listen and told me that it sounds fine. He said that he thinks it could be the alternator but to wait it out and see if it gets louder otherwise we're just throwing parts.

Get a new mechanic if he told you to carry on driving a car making that noise!

Could be the alternator, an idler pulley bearing or the water pump, if the water pump is original, it would be suspect, you may already be riding on a replacement water pump.

Stupid simple to figure out once the belt is removed, but removing the belt is not the easiest thing to do on the 4.8l.

Make sure you have a belt routing diagram and/or take a picture or make a drawing as I recall there are different belt routings on the V8 and they differ between engine size and model.

Yeah he told me that we could find out by pulling the belt and spining by hand but he told me to best just to wait till it gets louder. It's not really as loud as it shows on the video. It's more like it's just starting.

Damn it I seem to be lucky /sarcasm.
I was driving back home and I get the low oil light. Pull over and sure enough there's freaking oil sputtering everywhere from the bottom. I was closeby to a shop so I stopped there. they told me it's probably the alternator bracket seal. They couldn't quite locate the source of the leak but when the engine is running it starts spilling oil from the driver side of the engine. Fml. So they gave me a $1400 quote/ approx 10-11 hrs of labor which I had no choice but to agree as far is not really driveable in its state. Any chance these two issues are related?

Like the noise and the alternator bracket falling off?

Your mechanic is an idiot, BTW

Yes but all in, it would be more expensive if I were to take it somewhere else.. I might as well bite the bullet and have them repair it.

Yes I don't know if the noises could be related or something? I told the shop about it since they're going to be there. As for my mechanic yes, I agree he's an idiot but he's an honest guy and does good work for a good price. Like I said I don't know if he dismissed it because he was too busy or what but I do see his perspective as it was just a not so loud sound. even now, it's still very faint and it actually sounds a lot more louder on my video and I think it's probably because I had the mic right up there.
