I have a friend who brought a CLK-GTR in and couldn't get it to pass emissions (he had to install lots of safety equipment too, but did so just to get it through importation), but bought a S500 and "swapped" motors for a little while then re-installed the crated motor once it was imported......not quiet legal (nor cheap) but it worked. FL has no emissions so once it was here there was no issue for him.

Thanks for all your advice guys. The engine and the gearbox were not the only reasons for wanting to keep the car. I want the entire car as it has a lot of options on it. Anything related to buying scrap car, importing the engine only, etc is not feasible and defeats the purpose (which was to have a similar car in the US without losing too much money). I guess i'll just have to sell and buy another one.

Does the US have any temporary permits? for a few months? a year? anything?
