if there are no leaks, they will occur some day. If you buy E46 with 80k miles and it is not leaking coolant that only means the coolant system repair is due. Or engine change afterwards.

@mac,

As chatcher said, don't get too worried about what you read on internet. Those who don't spend a fortune on repairs are not heard from much.

I have only done 60K miles on my 2008 4.8i. I had extended warranty through Nov 2012. Had Automatic Hold button and iDrive screen replaced under that.

Only one real repair in last 3 years. The transmission leak that cost $1,105 at BMW dealer. All the rest of the repairs add up to less than $1,000. So repair costs not been an issue at all.

Maintenance is not cheap because I go to BMW dealers. No decent indies around me at all. Tires and brakes are pricey.

Note that if your battery hasn't been replaced, that that should be done.

The real question, is this:

I have 5 days to return it and after reading endless pages on here I am starting to feel like it's absolutely inevitable to end up spending $10k more in repairs in the next year or two as I cross this major mile mark.

I can handle some DIY and an Indy can obviously do a couple thousand in repairs, but I would love to hear about some of the most common problems from owners of 100k+ 4.8 e70's.

For those of you with high mile e70's, what went over 100k?

I will not try to scare you but, hopefully this is what you can do on Monday.

I own a 2008 x5 with a 4.8 and 159K on it. ( a little validation)

I would immediately do a per-purchase inspection at an INDY shop (not at BMW dealer)
- check for oil leak from "gasket to nowhere" (oil seal on alternator bracket) (mine went out at 130K)
- check transfer case front and back shaft play (my just went out at 159K)
- check valve seals and if repair was done (mine are leaking and it will be a 4K or less repair)
- check to see if fuel pump was replaced (call to service by BMW) (mine went out at 137K)
- check ac compressor (mine went out at 142K)

Each one of these repairs is something I would expect to fail. Prices are about a $1K and up for each (except fuel pump)

Side Note:
Here are repairs I did before 100K
- coolant transfer pipe with valve valley cover gasket
- rear air bag (suspension)
- alternator
- throttle body
- rear drive axle assembly
-transmission fluid flush because there is a pipe with leaky seals inside (this needs to be done)

That's about it in the last 90K/3 years I've owned the X5.

Add regular service and 2 battery changes.

A lot of people come to forums for help with their problems. Not a whole lot come to say my car runs great no issues whats-so-ever.

That's because you don't want to jinx the truck.
