You could try another dealership before you contact BMWNA

Finally fixed, new engine!!!

Hey guys wanted to give you an update since the car was at Park Ave BMW for over a month.

When I bought it to the indy to replaced the tensioner, he told me it wasn't that and that it looked like the Vanos bolts where shearing off (recall done Jan 15). Next day when leaving work engine started missfiring and drove to him he told me that definetely the vanos is done and the bolts were traveling. So I had the car towed to BMW Svc. Ctr.

They diagnose the vanos on the computer but upon opening the engine found that the culprit was the eccentric shaft, so they proceeded to replace the shaft plus all the related parts plus a new VANOS when put engine back and test engine still missfired

They did the oil changed and found metal shavings all over. Since my car was out of warranty (66k miles)had to put up a fight with BMW NA to godwill 100% a new engine after a week of back and forth they approved it but had to pay 50% of labor not bad. Took about two weeks to get new engine in, then finally got the car back last night.

Apart from dropping in a complete new engine they also had to put new updated fuel injectors that fit the new engine design. Got new turbo seals, coolant hose, new bulkhead engine partitions, new expansion tank, and whole bunch of other parts, with other things that were done. They also replaced the left side bellow of the axle assembly.

I can tell you Park Ave BMW did an excellent job.

You can check out my thread at bimmerferst for pics of the new engine and work order. Bimmerfest - BMW Forums - View Single Post - 2011 BMW X5 35i engine knocking at 2000 rpm only 66k miles on car

Wow. Nice outcome, even with only having to pay 50% of labor. That could have been crazy expensive.

Did they have any guess at where the shavings came from?

Yeah the VANOS bolt sheared off exactly a year after they performed the recall. They went thru the eccentric shaft into the valves and cylinders.

Nothing like metal working it's way through your engine from top to bottom. I'm surprised a knock was the only symptom.

Well at least it worked out in a nice new engine. Amazing the difference a helpful dealer can make.

I agree with your second video:

I think your serpentine belt tensioner is bad and needs to be replaced.
Is anything else loose on the belt assembly?
I notice mine is shaking like this. Did you get it fixed or is it normal to for this part to shake like this?

Yeah is normal to move like that, now if you hear the diesel rattle from the videos then you need to bring it to the dealer right away as your VANOS is failing.

Yes 100% if I had continued dealing with Paul Miller in Wayne I would be stuck with worthless pile of junk right now, but Park Ave BMW in Hackensack NJ does take care of its customers.
