Wow!

I have around $4000 TOTAL on maintenance/repairs (including tires & brakes, excluding oil/filter changes), with over 200k miles (and regular towing duty).

That's the total cost getting from 100k miles to over 200k miles.

DIY is the only way to go.

Seems the X5s like the TX/FL climate much more then the cold ones.

True, but this is a CPO and I have two more years to go and 48k miles. No more BMWs without a warranty for me.
Besides this X5 I have a 2015 X1 (wife's ride) with only 500 miles, so far. This one I'll keep for a long time. She doesn't like changing cars too often.

I understand people 'love' their cars (whatever humans-metal love is) but it's not worth it.
First day my CPO expires (Jan 1st, 2018) my X5 is gone. I'd rather drive a Chevy than dealing again BMW problems. I remember years ago I had a 325. Boy, what a headache. Months of trying to figure out all problems, tons of money spent on parts and I ended up trading it. It was so frustrating.
I traded my X in for a Chevy and have been very happy with the decision. Pretty sure that car was going to spontaneously combust. To the OP, get out

It is totally weird how I've formed an attachment to this thing. After all the things I've gone through with it I almost feel a sense of loyalty. Clearly it doesn't feel the same! lol

Put 60 miles on it now after the filter change and it actually feels pretty good. Crappy filter might have just let some impurities into the oil and clogged the fine passages in the vanos. But that could just be wishful thinking, or a temporary bandaid.

I've heard those E53 are pretty good on longevity. I've probably spent $4k just getting from 45k-90k! And looks like getting it to 100,000 might take another $4k+ with the oil pan and sway bar leaking as well.

Plus I cringe at the thought of all the things that could go wrong doing major surgery on a high mileage engine. My indy said it's apparently suggested by BMW to re-tap the threads in the magnesium block to ensure they don't give way when torquing the new head.

I did notice my local dealer has a '14 CPO 335i with a 6 speed manual. Might give that a serious look this week.
