ICOM makes no difference here.
ICOM would be mandatory for MULF/COMBOX/CCC/CIC etc, but EGS/DDE/DME, a good quality cable with FTDI Chip will do just fine.

I have been using the One Stop Electronics OBD plug for years for flashing small modules, never let me down.

A chinese ICOM clone is about 500 bucks, plus power supply etc. This does not make sense to invest if this is to flash your very own once only.
Better go to the dealer or BMW Specialist. Should be around 200-300 bucks to get the job done.
