Choosing bodyshop while CPO

Hi folks

Are we required to take the vehicle to a BMW-certified/authorized bodyshop in order to maintain the BMW CPO coverage?

Got rear ended by 3 other cars this AM, and she held up like a champ.

Thanks!

No.

Do you feel comfortable managing your claim/insurance process? Multiple threads here and BF on how to take control, not let the insurance company (neither yours nor theirs) control the process. I tell the shop "you work for me, not them- you talk to me first, not them...*I* will deal with them". Not in a nutty, raving way- but to establish who is in control.

How much damage? what year/miles do you have? Unfortunately this could get very sad...If you have hatch/body damage, and hit 70-80% of 'what they think it is worth', you could get totaled. I know your search was extensive... and your costs including inspection, transport perhaps higher than usual. Beware of getting lowballed.

BUT...lets hope it is an easy repair! Sorry.

I am pretty comfortable managing on my own. Mine is a 2012 with 50k mi that I own for 10 months. There seems to be damage to rear bumper and both sections of rear hatch. All glass is intact. Underneath looks OK but I would not know until the shop will put on alignment rack. There is no way I am looking at total loss with this, just does not look like enough damage. Contemplating using a nonBMW authorized shop and saving $$ for a tow hitch.

Yeah, I saw a few posts on how you went about the purchase- you seemed methodical.

Look up diminished value (DV)

Rear ended and dealing with repairs - Bimmerfest - BMW Forums

UPDATE: Rear end crash repairs finished @ $12,000+ - Bimmerfest - BMW Forums

Some comparison threads.

Either shop will be kicking you back the tow hitch, why would a nonBMW one have different policies than a BMW shop? Nowadays there shops are pretty tight with insurers. IMO you migth get the shop to install it for gratis, 'as long as we are doing the labor' and you jsut buy the parts....

Edit: Id find the very best bodyshop you can, and not worry about BMW approvals nor who will kick back a hitch install. (deal with the hitch later)

Something to consider: my was rear ended and about 20K miles later rear diff housing snapped. Be careful.

I just got rear ended myself on fathers day and am dealing with the same thing. The truck held up well and damage looks cosmetic. Then you drive it and its a horse of a different color. Vibrations @ 80mph and this lovely popping noise coming from the front end every time I am backing out of the driveway. The Squeaks and rattles are making me nuts. The shop is sitting at 5500 right now and the outlook is bleak.

As ARD stated, look into a Diminished Value claim. I did one in '06 on my old '01 e53 when it was 5 years old--a lady pulled out right in front of me and I smashed through her engine compartment. I had $20K in damage. The value before accident was like $28K. I actually filed the DV on my own insurance Allstate even though she got the ticket. That's one advantage with the big carriers as they will take care of stuff like that. They ended up cutting me a check for $7K.

I got rear ended a few years ago in my E53 and thought the first shop I chose was going to take care of the repairs. Turned out to be a headache. http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...nt-notice.html Choose your shop wisely. I suggest BMW-certified/authorized bodyshop or a super super, reliable shop. I would do some intensive google searching and reviewing all of the reviews, even making a few calls to the bodyshops. Good luck.

Ard - thank you Sir. My logic of going to non BMW shop is because any sort of "kick back" is unethical or may be illegal, and bigger shops (BMW-certified) will not agree to that. Or will not agree based on the grounds that they are not desperate for business and won't care for concessions.

But what I am getting from others that our cars are too damn complex and there can be a lot of hidden damage. So I am not going to F*** around and take her to the best shop can find, owned by a BMW dealership. Even if it will mean that I won't be able to get a kickback...

My truck drives fine, had it on the hwy, and upper gate opens/closes like it should.
