I think we may have a break through as far as exhaust noise and misfires. Sadly, replacing MAF, spark plugs, ignition coils haven't solved my problem of vibration, low RPMs, some hesitation and strange rhythmic sound out of exhaust.

Put truck on the hoist and took a temperature gun to measure temp of cats, since misfires were only taking place on passenger side bank. My buddy
( mechanic ) thought something was up with the oxygen sensors or cats. Turns out the passenger side cat was measuring 300 degree hotter than the drivers side. He says it is plugged and needs replacing.

Are there any ways to save money with this repair? After market cats? Punch out cat and run straight pipe..lol?

Thoughts?

if you have no emission checks you can de-cat. not sure what the law in ontario says tho.

There is a way to run decatted and still pass emissions. You can run an o2 sensor spacer which manipulates the flow the cat 02 sensor sees and tricks it into thinking a cat is still present. 42DD sells them, I've done it one other cars that were modified....O2 Sensor Spacer - 42 Draft Designs

Thanks for all the ideas so far.

Thought is was the CATS and it still may be the CATS. Truck is a 2009 with 135k and CATS warranty runs out after 8 years or 130k. Just my luck. Anyways, BMW needs to determine if its the CATS before making a Good Will Warranty claim so it went to the dealership to get checked out. Took it in yesterday.

As I mentioned, I have been getting Misfire codes and never any other codes but yesterday on my way to the dealership, I got another code, ran it with my scanner and its a P014A - Oxygen Sensor Delayed Response Rich to Lean Bank 2 Sensor 2. Anyone know what this means?

SA called me back today and told me the tech says its not my CATS or at least doesn't think its my CATS because I would have driveablility issues especially on the highways but they could dig deeper to the tune of 5 hours labor so they can check fuel injectors, coils, take out oxygen sensors and look into the CATS with a camera. He mentioned the Misfires but not this last P014A code. How is this possible? Waiting for him to call me back.

I told him truck idles great without MAF and the PUTT PUTT is gone. He got excited and ran to tell the TECH but havent heard back yet. Hopefully, they will have some info I can use.

Just wanted to provide an update and find out if anyone has experienced the P014A code before.

Thanks!

Day 2 at the dealership. SA just called me and told me Tech is 95% sure it isn't CATS. However, they think I am having Eccentric Cam Shaft issues and both need to be replaced along with solenoid, valves and other shit. HE also mentioned the cylinders are most likely damaged and need to be replaced. The repair quote??????? $24000. WTF???

I have never had any engine lights until the last 2 weeks and it is only for misfires. Truck has always suffered from vibration at idle and low rpms but never any drivability issues. Confirmed that the valve seals are not an issue and the rest of the truck is original, no engine repairs. How does this just creep up all of a sudden?

Is this even possible?

Ive been reading that the Eccentric Cam Sensor can go bad and cause my symptoms but he didn't mention that, only that the shafts need to be replaced and everything that goes with it. The sensor may not even throw a code. Not happy right now.

Thoughts??

they're probably trying to steer you to buy another vehicle. this seems utterly excessive, you can buy an entire replacement engine & gear box for that money

Get it back and take it to one of the many indy shops in the area. Bimmersport and RMP are the most popular. Which dealership did you take it to in the GTA?

Tech and SA are just lost.... for him to just toss in "the cylinders are likely damaged and needs replacing" ..then $24k...they have no clue and just want you (1) gone or (2) open wallet.

Follow advice above.

I'll be honest with you, this kind of "diagnosis" does work. I do know of a few techs (acquaintances) who work for dealerships in the Greater Toronto Area and they say that people pay. They said that I'd be surprised by how many individuals indicate "ok, go for it, and call me when it's done". I guess they think that OP must have really large pockets.
