News report on my radio station today stated recall extended now up to 2014 X5 and X6 models -

No update on BMW recall checker yet by my VIN, but I feel better that my wifes new to her X5 will not experience this failure as it did worry me -

I posted this on another board that had a thread about this but I'll copy and paste it here.

Here is the information from NHTSA's website:
March 2, 2017 NHTSA Campaign Number: 17V138000
Front Driveshaft Universal Joint may Fail
If the front universal joint fails, the front wheels would not be driven, affecting vehicle traction. Additionally, continued driving of the vehicle with a broken front universal joint may damage other components. Either condition may increase the risk of a crash.

NHTSA Campaign Number: 17V138000

Manufacturer BMW of North America, LLC

Components POWER TRAIN

Potential Number of Units Affected 121,737

Summary

BMW of North America, LLC, (BMW) is recalling certain 2011-2013 X5 xDrive35i, X5 xDrive50i, X5 M and X5 xDrive35d vehicles, 2011-2014 X6 xDrive35i, X6 xDrive50i and X6M vehicles, and 2011 x6 ActiveHybrid Vehicles. Water and debris may enter the front driveshaft's universal joint, causing excessive wear and possibly resulting in the joint's failure.

Remedy

BMW will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front driveshaft, free of charge. The recall is expected to begin April 24, 2017. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417.

Notes

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

Thanks. I still have not been reimbursed for the towing when mine broke, and now that it's a full recall including mine I don't see how they can deny me. Outrageous.

I still can't fathom how my wifes car is 1 month outside the range of production dates for the recall and I can't imagine that this potential defect with the driveshaft occurred for 3.5 years but somehow the last 2 months of production is not an issue?

Hers is a May 17, 2013 build. E70 production stopped in June.

Howdy neighbor :-) Maybe they changed they design or supplier of the driveshaft in the middle of the production year?

It's not unusual to see minor changes when a new "build month" starts. That's why if you go on realoem.com looking for parts numbers it asks for your build month.

Hey neighbor - I'm not a betting man but will surmise they didn't make a magic supplier change with 2 months left in production of that model, considering that the defect carries to the 2014 F15 models -

(and also considering at the time of production this was not known to be a problem)

Just like last year when it only was like 20,000 vehicles, I'm sure it will get opened up again -

Part # is 26208605866 and actually superses an old part number per RealOEM - if you pull the part number it says "From 2/2013" - If I recall correctly, the original recall said it was to catch all the driveshafts prior to that February 2013 production with the old part number -

So if they are extending the recall to April 2013 production you bet your ass my wifes May 2013 production is affected -

That being the case I would point out to your dealer (Bridgewater?) and BMWUSA if need be (and NHTSA if need be) that you know the part is the same and you want it replaced pronto. You don't want to go through what we did, believe me!
