Eccentric sensor error codes after valve cover gaskets?
On cold starts where the engine is dead cold I will get a little engine stutter immediately after startup but just a second after, the engine runs fine and I wont have any issues. No issues on a warm start whatsoever. My indie cleared the codes and they immediately came back. I wasn't having any issues before the valve cover job. They said without further diagnostic (several hours in labor) they don't know 100% what the issue is. Just wanted to pick everyone's brains here on a likely cause or something to look at before I spend more money at the shop. Does something need to be calibrated? anyone else have this issue? Thanks again everyone!

I guess I should clarify a little... Does anything need to be calibrated after removing the eccentric shafts AND replacing the sensor? I know these codes typically mean the sensor is bad. But seeing as how I was having no issues before the repair and the sensor is a brand new Genuine BMW sensor I had a hard time believing the sensor was defective. Could there be any other causes or things to look at before I tear the valve cover back off and replace the sensor with a different one? Not a fun job...

Any chance you could ohm both sensors and see if there is a difference. Not sure what that would really tell you.

I had this happen to me when replacing leaky valve cover gasket. Broke the sensor as it was really brittle. The replacement sensor (original BMW part) was dead on arrival but I learned about this only after I installed everything. I was able to connect original cracked sensor to connector, wiggled it to get it int the right position for computer to see it, used small magnet to simulate magnet on camshaft and clear the codes. That proved to me that second (replacement sensor) was bad. I was able to exchange the sensor under warranty, although had to take valve cover second time. Once new sensor arrived, I connected it before taking valve cover off to check if sensor is fine.

I haven't had very good luck with this thing... It appears that either the new Genuine sensor is either faulty or by some coincidence the drivers side sensor is now bad. I will be taking it back into the shop to have them run the diagnostic and will know for sure and go from there. Either way, it appears I will be yanking one of the valve covers again. Yay! so much fun!

Has this issue being resolved? Because I'm on the same boat as you, only I'm on my second sensor and nothing and the car now is showin also a code for the valvetronic motro which is probably related to the eccentric code.

Use ISTA +, and do some reset/recalibrate:
-VVT relearn end points -Camshaft sensor reset and calibration -Vanos reset ( both exhaust and intake) -Physically inspect ALL connections. Ensure they are seated firmly and correct! This is very important! Follow ISTA ‘s procedure step by step. You should be able to reset the sensors and in long term engine will learn new adaptations. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
