2011 X5 E70 N63 Sudden Oil Leak - FIXED !!!
I am a professional mechanic and know that I can tackle any job, and was smart enough to buy an "extended warranty" cause I can't poop out $8k dollar transmissions and $30k motors. Today I hop in my ride, and she is so fine, and I start her up and get the RED - Low oil pressure Warning .... I'm like, WTheck. Restart her a few times, same thing. after a couple minutes, I hear the motor looking for oil. I brush the snow off the hood, and pop it, wishing there was an oil stick. Then I notice a huge puddle of oil under the engine WTH is going on ???? The car is overdue for an oil change, and coincidentally, UPS just dropped off the new filter and 10q Castrol. Looks like passenger side, but can't tell with the shield on. We're talking ... Major Instant Oil Leak I'm HOPING clogged filter, blew o-ring, and other than a HUGE mess, I can handle this tomorrow (before the snow storm) Any and All opinions on the problem are welcome !!! Holy Crap, my baby almost bled out on my driveway Last edited by Jim Daniel; 02-12-2018 at 01:21 PM. |

A professional mechanic.... RED oil pressure...and you still let it run for 'a couple of minutes'??!?!?
Perhaps the oil was super thick due to temps, and a weak hose gave out? Hope it is only a hose...after running it without pressure |

As a professional mechanic, I don't put much stock in dummy lights. The moment I saw it, I hooked up Carly. My actual oil pressure parameter was 120 but the signal coming from the pressure switch was zero, (causing the light). Thanks for zero insight to my problem, but I do appreciate the brow beating |

Thank you so much for your time, much appreciated. I'm in the USA, both my steering wheel and oil cooler are on the left, (sitting in the car and looking out the front window). But it seems the oil was coming from the other side. I had yet to even shovel the snow off the driveway, kinda looked under the car only to see the oil covered shield. I have a rental car arriving here in 15 minutes, so I'll have wheels to run around with. 1) - Any ideas where I can get an oil cooler hose quickly ?? 2) - any other folks with any other ideas, or experience with this sudden leak? thanks again |

Put in the last 7 digits of your VIN and you can bring up any schematic. It's a great resource. Good luck with the fix.

Www.newtis.info as well.
It is irresponsible to allow a post that says "I let it run with the red oil pressure light on" without pointing out that it is INCREDIBLY risky. |

In changing, the trick is to tie a string at the end when you pull out the hose, then tie the new hose to the string to pull it in place. Then bolt it in. You can finish the job in 30 mins tops. Sent from my SM-N910F using Tapatalk |

I'm still in awe that you ran the engine with a low oil pressure warning. The odds of your pressure switch crapping out at the exact same time as you getting an oil leak aren't particularly high.
Also justifying it with the Carly reading is fine isn't a good excuse in my mind. The oil pressure SWITCH (under vacuum pump), unless I'm mistaken, is purely for an idiot light. The oil pressure SENSOR that the ECU would use, and Carly reports, could very well be in a different location (I don't know where). As in you could have pressure at the sensor location (before leak) but low pressure at the switch (after leak). For you and your engine's sake I hope I'm wrong. Sent from my LG-H872 using Tapatalk
