Unfortunately had plans after work yesterday so no updates. Working late tonight so we'll see if I can make any progress. Fortunately other than the PCVs it's just reassembly at this point and then an extra day after bleeding before I return it to my wife. Sent from my LG-H872 using Tapatalk

Got mine reassembled, filled, and bled tonight. No leaks, road tested OK, coolant got up to 100C (I have a cooler-than-OE thermostat), and fan ran at startup and after thermostat opened. No more rattling noise. Will double check coolant level in the morning when it is cold, but for now all is right with the world.

I did indeed work too late last night so didn't get anything done, and the wife wants to head to the lake this weekend, so it won't be until early next week that I'm done, which is fine with her.

You drop one of the logicseven stats in yours? Been thinking about that myself... Nice work on getting her running again! I love the "all is right with the world" - kind of feels like you're missing a leg when she's not running LoL! Sent from my iPhone using Xoutpost.com |

Yes. When I first bought the X5 I encountered everything under the hood which is either plastic or rubber (basically everything!) had petrified and was brittle or broken. Engine partitions, coolant hoses and their o-rings, oil cooler thermostat housing gasket, etc. etc. It seemed to me that these parts couldn't take the heat, so I bought into the idea that the 105C OE thermostat is just too hot for the engine bay. I think the Logic 7 one is 95C, and I now regularly register 100C while driving as opposed to the 110C before. Next big project is all of the upper gaskets and seals on the engine. My X5 leaks oil, and I noticed while doing the water pump that bank 2 valve cover gasket and both upper timing cover gaskets are leaking significantly. I have all the parts and will do this sometime before winter, so I have some time to work up the courage and reserve the time... |

![]() When you do all that work, make sure you clean the vanos solenoids.

I have the N62. I'm familiar with removing the alternator, as I had to remove it to do the oil cooler thermostat housing gasket. I also recently rebuilt the VANOS on an S54, so that experience should help. All the info I've found suggests removing the valve covers on the N62 is usually a bear. Not really looking forward to that.

FINALLY finished. Messed my back last weekend, so all I did by Tuesday was get the WP back in. Wednesday I double checked the torque and stood up..... And bang. Serious pain. Stopped for the day and didn't bother on Thursday. Friday felt great and got 90% done, but after tightening the last clamp on the #5 hose, bang again. Had to lay down in the garage haha. Been taking it easy all weekend, just tightened up the AC belt, installed air intake and filled with coolant. Ran it while watching coolant temp and all good, no leaks, no knocking. Another positive was no smoke after idling and then giving it some gas, so that would be an extra bonus is the new PCV fixed some of the oil consumption
![]() Hopefully test drive later. Car will be returned to the wife Tuesday for DD duties. Another fun hiccup was our backup car, a '99 mountaineer, completely lost it's power steering Thursday morning. Cars are fun. Sent from my LG-H872 using Tapatalk

HA! I can totally relate to the blood, sweat and tears it requires to care for and maintain an X! But I wouldn't have it any other way ![]() Very good to hear your X is back together! Keep us posted on the test drive. Can relate to the Mountaineer as well, I had an old Ford Explorer that ran forever, but when she decided to go, it was downhill fast. Sucker ran over 300 hundred thousand miles before electrical bugs finally took it out. Sent from my iPhone using Xoutpost.com |
