Got message on dash to Replace the Brake Fluid! Do i must do it?
2013 BMW X5 xDrive 35i (E70) L6-3.0L Turbo (N55) with 57800 miles on it, and the message come up to have the Brake Fluid maintenance , so my question is: Do i need to do this now or it can be done at later time? Just wondering if cover under warranty or... From what i remember my full warranty was done at 50000 miles and then what was left up to 100000 miles for engine and transmission. Just want to make sure , i am not doing something that will void the warranty by not going or... Thanks for any advice.

Brake Fluid Service is usually just a 24 month reminder. Brake fluid changes are recommended due to possibly moisture absorption. Moisture absorption can cause brake fluid performance problems if there is a high level of moisture in the fluid, it can boil and impact the temperature performance of the fluid and also cause corrosion in the braking system.
You can delay the fluid change, it is wise to change it, but 2 years is pretty conservative as well. Keep in mind some manufacturers do not recommend or remind brake fluid service and some cars never get the brake fluid flushed throughout their lifetime, not recommended, but happens all the time in the real world. Fluid change is not probably included beyond the 48 Month/50k mile Bumper to Bumper coverage. To reset the Service Reminder you should be able to use Carly for BMW to reset the Reminder if you choose to DIY the fluid change.

Out of interest re fluid changes:-
Years ago when main dealers and manufacturers started suggesting 2 year fluid replacement I purchased a proper fluid tester, one that actually measures moisture content and then boils a sample to test it. I have yet to find ANY vehicle where the fluid is anywhere near out of spec even after 4 years of not being changed! YMMV |

I also have used these copper test strips to verify the brake fluid -
Amazon.com: Phoenix Systems (3003-B) Brake Fluid Test Strips, 2 Strips Per Package, Reveals Brake Fluid Condition: Automotive Unless you are tracking the car or really in some excessively humid areas, the brake fluid takes a while to really become contaminated. I guess BMW wants the brake fluid to be a fresh as possible. 2 years is a smart idea, but may be excessive as well. Lifetime transmission fluid, but every 2 years on brake fluid! Go figure. On is a safety system, but only a small percentage of cars on the road ever get brake fluid flushed on a regular basis. Some never get the fluid flushed.

I change mine, since I neglected it on my E53 and had a either a brake hose collapse or a caliper stick, and ended up replacing both front calipers, rotors, pads, and hoses. It may or may not have been related to ignoring the brake fluid change, but it's possible some materials used in the calipers are more susceptible to corrosion than with other vehicles.

It doesn't cost that much, so it's worth doing.

Mine is due, too ('08 with 77K miles). It's only like $150 at an Indy I believe so not a major expense.

You can try something like this to measure. Reviews seem good for accuracy.
Can save you some money.

As you can see, it isnt a critical task. Yes, if you had an ABS pump/modulator failure, BMW could say 'you didnt maintain it properly'. But this is exceedingly rare. Get it done in a month or two, no need to use BMW. |

removing the tires is the hardest part in changing brake fluid if you have proper brake bleeder. Just did mine the other day
