Passenger door won't open from outside or inside door lock actuator?
Any help is appreciated. Last edited by muleskinner; 07-23-2018 at 11:46 AM. Reason: update |

I'm suspecting your door lock actuator to be at fault here. Research threads explaining door lock actuator failures.
Your front passenger actuator should be 51-21-7-315-022. Let us know what you find! |

I thought I'd update this, as I've learned from BMW that when the actuator fails, your door cannot be opened from the inside or the outside. I finally took it to the dealer. They gave me a disclaimer that -some of the time- the door panel will break when they remove it. I should point out that they can't actually fully remove the panel with the door shut. They get just enough of a gap at the top to access the actuator. The part itself was $200, but they charged me about 6 hours labor. As it turned out, the failure of the actuator was unrelated to me upgrading the speakers a few days prior to the failure. Anyway, glad I didn't have to paint the car orange and use it like The General Lee in the Dukes of Hazzard.

Thank you for the update and glad it worked out without the door panel breaking! And yea 6hrs sounds reasonable considering I'm sure they had to remove the seat (possibly the back seat too in order to prevent any accidental gouching of the leather on it while fishing out the heavy front seat)... and then on top of that to work in a confined space with just prying the bottom of the door panel. I'd certainly hate to be the one to do that lol

Has anyone found a reasonable fix solution for this kind of actuator failure? This just happened to my front passenger door. It actually stopped working in the open/ unlocked state and then I decided to push the lock post down assuming it could be released by opening the handle from inside….. NOPE. Now I am here guessing in hopes that someone finds the “FIX”. If no-one finds an easy way to resolve this without destruction to the door card or removing seats then I will brave this out on my own and post my step by step to the group. Wish me luck.

The dealer didn't tell me how they were able to remove the door panel, other than a vague description as summarized above: "get just enough of a gap at the top to access the actuator". I'm guessing 95blkmax is correct, and that the passenger seat has to come out. That's actually not difficult. Use a Torx 50 socket to remove the bolts. The difficult part is that you'll be working in a cramped environment in the front without the door opening, but once the seat is out of the way, you might even be able to access the bottom screws that hold the door panel in. While you're in there, you might as well upgrade your speakers! Good luck with the job, and hope you can post DIY for others.

Well it’s done! I have to admit it was easier than I expected it to be. First I rolled the passenger window all the way down and reached in to remove the door handle trim then the two T-20 screws. Then removed the pull handle trim to get to the T-20 screw underneath. Then I popped the door card loose from the top side and wedged a 10” long screwdriver between the door card and door body. This gave me room to see the actuator and see what I needed to do next. I then laid the passenger seat all the way down and back so that I could get right in there. After removing the power plug from the actuator,I was able to shock the actuator with 24v. I was not carful on this because 1. it was still a reach 2. I don’t care about the old actuator and any last movement out of it could only help me. I heard a slight tick then plugged the cars power plug back in and... POP it opened. I was able to open the door and finish the job in a normal fashion.
I will try to post some pictures after I get them up to a host. Last edited by verylarry; 10-17-2018 at 11:28 AM. |
