N52 engines are notoriously loud. Engine oil will usually look dirty even right after being changed.

That being said, I highly recommend getting a “used oil analysis” performed when you drain the oil tomorrow. Save some used oil in a clean jar or plastic container and order an oil analysis kit (I have used Blackstone a couple times). That is the only way to k ow what is going on inside the engine. I believe they are $20-25.

Also... are you using Castrol Edge 5W-30 A3/B4 or regular Castrol Edge 5W-30? The latter is not suitable for BMW engines.

1. Is that oil an approved BMW oil for your motor? DOnt make us look it up

2. You have 300,000 miles? 400,000 miles on that car? Dont make us guess

3. Any history on the car?

4. Why not get the oil sensor fixed?

5. You CONCLUSION that you have 'excessive oil wear' is one of the wackier things I have heard..... seriously. Time for some linear thinking sir.

The question was, is the oil you're using approved for your engine? You haven't answered that and ard doesn't want us to have to look it up.

Its wacky because you believe you are experiencing excessive oil wear, i.e., your oil is wearing. Oil "wears" in use, sure. Have you analyzed your oil, though? Besides, ALL oil "wears" some. What makes you think your "wear" is excessive?

It's simple. Add oil to maintain proper crankcase oil level. BMW didn't provide a dipstick on your vehicle so that requires a PROPERLY operating electric level sensor. Sounds like it might not be working correctly.

Maybe fix that first.

Maybe drain and refill the oil several times at fixed driving intervals to obtain your oil consumption and add oil at that rate between proper oil and filter changes.

Maybe draw an oil sample and have it analyzed.

Or don't fix the sensor or look into it any further. Don't try to obtain an accurate oil consumption rate. Don't get your used oil analyzed for wear metals.

Adding oil to maintain proper level will not affect the oil analysis results adversely. A reminder, one analysis in isolation is worthless unless it shows gross contaminants or wear metals in which case, further attention in the short term might be warranted.

Problem:
  1. I'm hearing a ticking noise in the engine, which I thought was due to low oil (see background)
  2. After adding more oil, noise persisted (5w30 Castrol Edge)
  3. I drained the oil to see how much oil would come out.
  4. ~7.85L came out, so over by 1.35L = not low on oil
  5. In total, I've put in 2L in 250ML increments over the last 1200 miles (2000 km)
  6. I noticed the oil was dirty, which makes me think excessive wear leading to Improper lubrication?
  7. Put the oil back in, knocking is still there
  8. Will change the oil and filter tomorrow
  9. Can anyone explain what causes excessive wear and how can I prevent it? Thicker oil? What can you recommend?

Quick background:
  • My last oil change, I switched to Castrol Edge 5w30 from Mobil 1 0W40.
  • I changed the oil because I had the same knocking sound and had only changed the oil around 1300 miles ago at the time.
  • When I drained the oil, only ~5.25L came out! So my car was low on oil (sensor said max )
  • When I changed the oil, the car ran perfectly fine and without knocking.
  • At the time, I didn't have an oil filter handy, so I ended up replacing it around 100 miles after my oil change
  • Since I couldn't rely on my oil sensor, I thought I would add oil periodically, because of consumption or leak
OK so a few points to draw from here:

- Do not add oil without first knowing what the level is. Overfilling an engine passed the max point has its own list of issues that would cause (including cavitation of the oil which leads to improper lubrication and bearing failure as a result).
- Like others have said, it seems that your oil level sensor is not consistent. You should replace it (along with its O-ring, do not re-use the original one) when you change the oil.

- Oil will always look dirty after running for a few cycles. I ASSUME you believe that because of how black it is after such a short period of time. Not always is it caused by metal wear. BTW, soft metal wear (like aluminum or cooper found in bearings... or even steel from the sleeves) will not turn oil black. These usually will settle at the bottom of the oil pan after sitting for some time. What turns oil black is carbon, primarily from piston blow-by getting passed the piston rings into the crankcase. This is normal engine operation (and the reason why PCV systems exist). What you want to determine is if you have EXCESSIVE blow-by. This can be done easily with a cylinder compression test. ... also, running brand new oil through a dirty old oil filter surely did not help (even if you changed it ~100mi after)

- Note this- even if you do have actual metal wear in the engine, running thicker oil will just "mask" the problem. But once a bearing or piston ring is starting to wear, it will just keep digging and wearing itself until you find yourself having to rebuild or replace the engine. Thicker oil WILL buy you more time (could be a couple months, could be years), but the end result is unavoidable

My recommendation-
- Change the oil with BMW-approved oil (which is what ARD was asking... it would tell you this on the back of the bottle under something like "approvals/ compatibilities", something like that). If it does not specify it is BMW-Approved, do not use it. Unlike in the past, not all synthetic oil is the same. And for God's sake, if you do not have a new oil filter at the moment, wait until you do
- While you change the oil, replace the oil level sensor too
- With this being done, NOW you can properly monitor your oil level and accurately assess oil consumption
- When you get the time, do a compression test on all the cylinders. I do not recall what the compression ratio of the N52 is, but if it's 10 or 10.5:1, your readings should be somewhere between 180-210 psi (obviously the higher the better, and there should not be more than a 10% variance from one cylinder to another). Any more than that and you may have a problem at that cylinder.

1. 'Solution'??? We don't know what the problem is!!!

2. You claim you have "excessive oil wear"... There is zero evidence of this.

3. Is your real issue some engine noise?

4. Did you just buy this car for cheap and are now realizing it has been beat on? Engine noise, driveline noise? Maybe run for years without the proper oil and care?

Use the right oil. THAT is step one.

Alright, before this thread goes off the rails, here is what you can do to see what’s going on with your engine. Everything else is just speculation:

- drain oil
- save some in a clean container (about a cup)
- order a UOA kit and send in for analysis
- refill with an “Longlife-01” approved oil (recommend Castrol 0W-40, best price)

That Castrol 5W-30 you posted is the incorrect oil.

And previous poster was correct about oil level. An overfilled engine can have catastrophic effects.
