N62 4.8 Owners - What oil are you using?

I have an 08 4.8i with 142k miles and due for an oil change. I've used the traditional 5w30 and 0w40 in the past, but something tells me at this mileage it's too thin to use. What are you guys using in your 4.8's? I have read posts of people using the 10w60 with no issues. I also do have the valve stem seal issue that has started to get pretty bad in last 3k miles or so

Sad. Just go to the auto part store and use what they tell you.

If you use thicker oil to 'fix' the stem 'issue' you will likely be damaging other bearing. You just won't know it.

This is the classic phase of 3,4th owners for bmws ... Some get taken care of, many get trashed

Unless you actually want to fix your car.

Use an LL-01 approved oil. Viscosity won’t matter much for leaky valve stem seals. I did have some success with ATP AT-205 Re-Seal in my 4.8. It’s far from your traditional “thick goop” oil stop leak additive. It’s actually water-thin, but it stopped mine from smoking. I still consume about a quart every 2,500 miles which is normal for many cars.

Some LL-01 options:
Castrol EDGE 0W-40 and 5W-40 (available at Walmart)
Castrol EDGE 5W-30 A3/B4
Liqui-Moly Leichtlauf 5W-40 and Special Tec LL 5W-30
Motul 8100 0W-40 and 5W-40

If you use 5w30 synthetic then it probably isn't BMW approved for extended service so make sure you change it at 5k-7k miles rather than the normal 15.8k (or whatever it is) miles. I always change my oil at about 7k miles even with the extended service oil.

Mobil 1 or Castrol Syntec(this is what I use) 0w40 is the correct commonly available oil to use. I get it from amazon when it is on sale in 5quart containers for $24 or so.

Most BMWs take 7-8 quarts. My 335i took about 7, I am just about to do my x5 4.8i but haven't yet.

BMW 5W-30 is no different than any other LL-01 oil. It can do extended drain intervals. That’s the whole idea behind LL-01 approval, it takes the guess work out of finding the right oil and guarantees quality/specs.

The 4.8 takes 9 quarts. FWIW, Mobil 1 0W-40 is no longer approved, but probably still fine.

Good point if you can find LL-01 approved oil then the 5w30 is fine.

From what I have noticed 0w40 "tends" to be approved (I switched to Castrol Syntec a while back so I didn't notice that Mobil One is no longer approved.

Most synthetic 5w30 oils on the market weren't LL-01 approved the last time that I checked.

This is what I use and like you 5-7K intervals. I never followed every 15K on any of my cars - E53, E90 & E46.

Rotella t6 here.
Great frikin oil. Very good shear resistance, good detergents, and cold viscosity too.
But pricey either.
Bout $19 - $23 per gallon depending on where u go.
Group 4 synthetic too.
