It does feel sluggish (to me) off the line compared to my '06 4.8is. The wife agrees. I always attributed it to the trans programming as I feel the diesel has slower shifts yet uses a variant of the same trans in my '06. But it feels a bit faster during passing maneuvers so she likes that.

I agree that ambient temp does play a huge role in how the 35d feels. At 40-50F it feels like a different vehicle than compared to 90-100F. But so did every other boosted engine I've driven so that doesn't surprise me.

When the alphabet stuff starts failing badly we'll delete and tune it. Then we'll see the 35d "wake up."

maybe the sluggishness you guys are feeling is turbo lag? I've driven a Malone tuned X5 and there is zero lag because they've adjusted the fueling at lower rpm range/throttle input

It might be. I don't do it regularly, of course, but if I powder brake up to about 2000 RPM, it launches almost violently.

Anybody watch any of the M50d acceleration videos? I want one so bad.

My 09 feels a bit quicker after my trouble in the fall was fixed but I did so much work that I don't know what made the difference. It does have (quite) a bit of lag, around town I keep the trans in sport setting. In D it just takes a split second too long to get of the line. The strength shows in mid-range where iit feels nice and torque helps you along.
The 35i I drove (in a long line of test drives last fall) was quick of the line but ran out of steam further up the rev counter and I felt it was not nearly as entertaining as the Cayenne S.

Last February I spent a week with a 320i wagon rental in the NL, and I was severely underwhelmed by its performance. BMW has really been throttling their gas models to gain mileage but the results are ugly. Diesels are being struck from the line up as they have been out of favor since "dieselgate" and German cities are threatening driving bans.

MB is less bashful it seems and still churns out some really entertaining diesels. Nevertheless styling at MB has been dodgy last few years and BMW is following them down the rabbit hole with the new X5 I feel.

If the 2013 35d feels slowish maybe chip would help? May decrease mileage a bit but could up the fun factor? Some are really positive about the results of chipping and mapping.

Everything else being equal, the quicker vehicle has more area under the Torque-RPM curve.

I experienced no statistically relevant reduction in fuel mileage after my tune. It's not a chip and you have to physically remove the DDE for programming unless that's changed.

I am sad to see the diesels going away. I was kind of looking forward to moving into a Cayenne S. Unfortunate that there's so many sad, stupid, hand-wringing fools out there. Maybe I'll just buy a huge obnoxious diesel truck instead.
