Currently I don’t even have the intake tube on the car. So what I believe you call the CCV is disconnected(the tube from the VC to the turbo intake tube) With the oil fill cap on and dipstick in if I were you put my thumb over that ccv it will continue to build pressure then when released it is a rush of air. Didn’t seem right to me. It’s also a steady build of pressure. Not pulsating. Also bottom turbo doesn’t even turn at a idle until revved some I will also take a look at the oil drain tomorrow when it’s cool again. |

If you cover the ccv while things are closed it will build pressure. There's no where else for the crank pressure to go.
The oil cap test is done with the ccv normal, not blocked. So you're saying that with the ccv to air, oil cap on and dipstick in, it's pushing oil like crazy? Try the oil cap test.. Ccv open or normally connected. Dip stick in. Turn the oil cap open and it should sit fine on the oil cap hole with vapor leaking past it. If the cap is flying off, then yes blow-by issue. Just trying to standardize the test. Ccv blocking by hand is just going to add confusion because it's not a normal condition. Also check the pipe from ccv to intake. Is it clogged or does it flow? It's nothing like a gas engine which has pistons under vacuum at idle due to throttle. Gas engines have very little blow-by at idle... They actually r run a vacuum and in some cars removing the oil cap or dipstick would increase the idle due to this. If we can say the crank pressure is normal then you can wonder if it's the oil drain which some people have found to be caked up/clogged. In that case, the oil pressure is forcing oil past the bearing seals and might explain why your turbo is not spinning at idle because then it acts like a bearing that is too tight. Just started it up. Dipstick in, intake tube is off so ccv is open, oil fill cap lose and sitting on top, it does a dance with slight smoke escaping. If I push down on the cap then release it will build enough pressure to pop it out of the hole....:/ going to get the drain off and take a look at that now.

Pulled the top turbo off in the process of pulling the drains.
Top turbo is friiiiied, enough to have ground down both compressor wheels some. Could barely turn the damn thing. Going to remove the rest of the drains to inspect for clogs. Anyone have a good one for a good price laying around to help a beatin and abused 35D owner out? |

Damn, was it difficult to remove?
Any idea what could have caused that? Was the turbo oil drain clogged for it? Aarodriguez sells them for a good price with core. I don't think they mod the small turbo for hybrid setup much, so it'll be hard to find a used one. Maybe car-part.com? |

You say this was 'water contamination'?

He thought it was from that but found despite the work the car didn't start. Turns out the ic was full of oil choking the engine... Probably from the small turbo leaking oil more and more. I think it was one of those crap shoots where you fix an issue only to find it was something else.

Yuuup just going down the rabbit hole. I blamed the fuel injectors for my no start condition because I had prior fuel pressure issues, the system was contaminated with rust/signs of moisture, so it made sense. But come to find out I also had a failed high pressure turbo causing all sorts of chaos.
So I got the drain pulled lose. It is squeaky clean. I obviously have the oil lines disconnected so I zip tied some baggies over them and did a quick start and blow by check. With the small turbo off my blow by has gone away. So looks like the compressor wheel blocking exhaust flow it must have created high exhaust back pressure causing high blow by. |

$531
https://www.partsgeek.com/gbproducts...EaApjjEALw_wcB $567 https://www.ebay.com/itm/Upper-Turbo...4383.l4275.c10 $730 https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/bmw...er-11657811405 Anyone see anything wrong with going with the parts geek turbo? Certainly a price gap. The parts geek and eBay listings are for 335D is there any difference for the X5? Last edited by 98roush; 06-30-2019 at 11:39 PM. |
