Of note:
There is a notice with my owners manual (2012 X5, Comfort Access,) that the transmitter CAN be accidentally locked in the car. And without a spare key/fob, you are essentially SOL. "Never leave the fob in the car." Second key and fob are well worth the dealer price. :-)

I personally think you're going down a rabbit hole trying to retrofit your car as you'll likely encounter far too many challenges that will make this a very costly venture. Definitely not cost efficient, but I am about 95% of the way there and there is no turning back at this point. I am also installing soft close doors (got a good deal on these on the forums) and just need to put in the interior harness (door harnesses and handles are all installed) and code to wrap things up. The key was finding someone that could have comfort access added as an option to my VIN so that I could order a CA key from BMW.
