suspension upgrade or fresh? which options?

Hey guys, so last week I was cut off by some half blind lady in a mini van. It was the worst accident avoidance maneuver I've had to do since owning my X5. Complete all four wheel lock up and swerve.

Coincidentally that same week I had to tow my 16" side console fishing boat to the cottage 3.5 hours away.

I'm not sure exactly when the damage occurred, but I most definitely having something going on with my suspension with one side lower and the ride is terrible. Bouncy and unstable.

I'm looking at different options but don't really know where to start and could use some insight.

A quick search for suspension refresh kits on google sent me to ECS tuning for their front and rear suspension refresh kit.

Would something like this be most likely what is required?

Also, I noticed the passenger side rear corner when coming in or out of a slight incline, as strange noise like a spring popping. Perhaps I've broken a spring? I've look around as best I can, but can't notice any immediate damage.

If I were to have to replace the springs, can anyone recommend a spring that provides a nice ride but that won't sag under tongue weight when I do have to tow occasionally?

My x5 is non-third row seating.

Thank you

I'd caution you to understand the parts involved and not shop 'kits'. They can sneak in some lower tier vendors, and do not include complete parts. Your link for example has nothing related to the shock/struts.

IMO go w oe parts....unless you want to get into re-engineering the suspension, spring rates, damper characteristics, all you will be doing is guessing based on marketing lies.

Thanks Ard. So if I understand correctly would your advice be to have my mechanic diagnose and replace with OEM parts as necessary until the root cause of the issues are resolved?

I'm not looking for a drop or anything other than a factory ride, however I was wondering if the rear coils did need to be changed if there was a better than factory alternative to compensate for tongue load when trailing?

I've seen other X5 E70's in the neighbourhood and they appear to sit significantly higher in the rear end than mine. When I bought mine, the previous owner had a hitch on it already so the rear suspension I suspect has seen better days and this recent near accident miss may have been the last straw.... Who knows what the vehicle was used to tow and how much weight would have been on the tongue.

Welp, I'd prolly do a mixture....

First, something has happened to yours. Jack it up, pop off the wheels, look at your springs and componets around the springs. IF anything is amiss, you will need to basically rebuild the struts. New bushes, rubber, etc. Maybe springs. Maybe the dampers (i.e. Shocks)

Now, there is a separate issue- the rest of the kinematic suspension- arms, bushes, sway bars, etc. This is always a challenged. I did I my E39M5 at 180k, and wound up replacing EVERYTHING. OE or OEM. Everything that had rubber or could wear. It was excessive. Subframe bushes, diff bushes, every arm, steering...motor mounts..guibo.. And on and on.
But most sane people draw a line.... I had it since new and wanted a new car again. It was a 2 month project...renting tools, etc etc

For yours, I'd probably recommend the 2nd or 3rd level of parts that gets worn. not subframe. Not diff. So sway bars mounts and links, upper and lower control arms, thrust bushes. Ball joints. Look at wheel bearings, but not sure.

Anyway, my random thoughts.....

So I had my x5 checked out and as I suspected it has some serious suspension issues.

Rear passenger side coil is snapped, and both sides front control arms appear to be done.

It's going in to my indie next week to have him start an estimate to pull and replace whatever is necessary.

Ard as I'm going to be replacing both rear coils as well as shocks most likely, do you have any suggestions on a bit stiffer spring for towing purposes?

Also, do you have an opinion on the Eibach lowering spring set?

(https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/suv...ibach-2093-540) Would you consider these to be OEM quality?

Thanks
