e70 Smell

Strange title right?

I recently picked up a 2012 e70. Cars been good so far, although the sunroof is making me nervous.

I picked the car up from a local dealer, it seems to have some sort of air freshener smell that I'm hoping will go away.

My past experience with both Mercedes and BMW - I used to own an e34 and picked up an e53 for my son - is that the German cars have a unique smell. I recall being told that it was from the upholstery using horse hair, but in any case the e70 doesn't have that smell.

I hoping the air freshener will wear off and it will start to have that traditional aroma.

could be a smoking car that they 'treated'... good luck, hope it clears up. Look into Ozone treatments.

Try changing out the cabin filters with new OEM units. When I got my 2013 X5d it didn't have a bad smell but it was definitely not the "stock smell" or whatever. I changed out the cabin filters and within a day or so it is back to what I would consider a stock smell. Just a faint smell that is different than the air outside, that's about it.

I've also read in a lot of restoration forums that if you go buy a piece of upholstery vinyl from a fabric shop and stick a chunk under each seat during the summer it will restore "new car smell". I've never tried it but it would make sense.

It doesn't smell bad -just different. It just doesn't smell like the e53 or the 450SL.

I don't think I've been in another e70, so I don't know if BMW changed the way they manufactured the interior. Just looking for some feedback from others.

That's much older German vehicles. Mercedes, BMW, VW, etc. Horse hair hasn't been in a BMW in quite awhile. Maybe the E21 3 series? Mercedes used it longer than BMW though.

As for restoring the regular smell, I do notice that our E70 doesn't smell like our E53. But then again, I find most chassis of BMW have a unique smell. If you have no smell at all, as Ard said, might have been treated for odor.

That was 1983 or so...

Only 35 years ago.

In other words, pretty recently in terms of 'bmw mechanic lore'...

My 86 911 and previously owned 320is had very similar smells. I think it's just what was used in manufacturing back in the day in Europe. Your X5 is never going to smell like that.

I'm going to have to find another X5 driver locally and be like "hey - not to be weird or anything, but can I smell your car...."
