E70 x35d no start after repairs

Hi Folks, I had stalling and low coolant temps so I narrowed down the issue to the crankshaft position sensor and the thermostat. I had codes for the CPS, nothing for coolant temperature.

After removing power, replacing parts over a few days, it's all back together and cranks but will not start. It's on a set of ramps and I got the DSC 4x4 warning and angle steering sensor. Cleared those (Foxwell NT540).

At this point, I've triple checked all my connections during the repairs. Checked fuel related fuses (although I didn't open the fuel system). I can't figure out why it won't start. No codes when scanning for BMW codes. I now have a low battery warning but the failure to start has been consistent from the beginning.

Any ideas on this one? Is there something I have to reset after having the negative battery cable removed for a few days?

Are you sure the Crank position sensor is properly adjusted?

Also, low battery for many days and starting issues could be EWS (?) system losing sync between modules....w low battery, the system starves some modules, and the DDE never has enough power to properly start up and run.

-- How would you adjust the CPS? Seemed plug and play only unless it's possible to update the replacement in software.

-- I did trickle charge the battery in an attempt to resolve that as a possibility. I can try that again.

Thanks Ard.

do you know about:

www.newtis.info

?

an online BMW service system.

Also CPS can be camshaft position sensor or crankshaft position sensor. kinda used interchangeable (or confusingly)

Actually there was someone here or on bimmerfest with this precise issue in the last week or two...I think...

Cam position sensor or thermostat could not have caused the initial stalling. Cam position sensor on diesels is only used during start up to determine cam/crank relation.

I blew right by that part....

‘Stalling’ issues is an odd one. OP...just dies? Or only at idle? Or only cold? Or?

Ground strap/voltage issue perhaps?

I was getting intermittent stalls during acceleration and a couple of times the engine did shut off. No codes for a few weeks and then finally it threw a crankshaft position sensor code and that led me to replace it.

I did replace the camshaft sensor first and prior to any codes since it was easy to access.

I'm letting the battery charge overnight but based on the links you provided where another user had the same exact symptoms, I'm going to go back in, remove starter, and check the positioning of the crankshaft position sensor if it doesn't fire up tomorrow morning. Hopefully the second time is a charm.

Thanks for the replies and links!

Check the engine ground strap: https://www.xbimmers.com/forums/show....php?t=1632755

A flyer, but easy to check.

Update: Dodging the rain and work, I was able to remove/inspect and reinstall the recently purchased crankshaft position sensor (CPS from here on out). The CPS looked seated and installed correctly but it did have some abrasion on the end as if it was scuffed up a bit. I didn't have another one so I reinstalled it, buttoned everything up and tried to start it again.

It did not start, but unlike the first attempt, I did get some codes to repeat. I have the following:
4D87/not present: Exhaust gas temp sensor after exhaust gas recirculation cooler signal
3E91/not present: DDE: Crankshaft sensor signal
48DC/not present: 48DC Charging pressure sensor plausibility

I've ordered a new CPS and it should be here in a few days. I'll tear it down again and replace it. Updates to follow. On the plus side, I can remove the starter quickly now.
