Update: It's fixed! Ultimately the crankshaft position sensor was not seated correctly. It was slightly askew and it changed the angle of the sensor enough to cause the no start condition.
Thanks to Ard and others for commenting. I think Ard gets a donut for questioning the seating of the sensor being correct early on. ![]() I'm including two photos, one showing the incorrect installation and the second showing the final reinstall that allowed for normal starting. Here is an interesting tidbit..
On the E39, M5 (S62) the sensor sits off the flywheel and has a really finnicky adjustment. It is very easy to bump it, mess it up when doing a clutch job. You get done and no start..... it becomes a classic symptom within the e39M5 community. So when I first saw this cropping up in E70s it seemed a good thing to check. At least you didnt need to drop the trans! |
