Rear Right Click when accelerating - CV joint?

The X5 (e70 3.0si) has developed a loud click that appears to come from the rear right side/wheel; I can hear it clearly and is speed dependent --1 click per wheel turn-- it does not change if turning or going in a straight line, however, it only sounds when accelerating; e.g. if I let go the accelerator and allow the car to coast, the click goes away completely; as soon as I press the accelerator again, the click returns.

It is very noticeable between 10 to 40 km/h, after that seems to fade away --it could be that by then the wheel is turning faster so clicks are closer--

I'm suspecting a CV join but would appreciate other items to look for; by the way, I few weeks ago I got the Parking Brake malfunction and was in the process of sourcing parts; not sure if this will be related or maybe the same issue.

Thanks.

Hello,
I had a similar problem. Noises from the rear when driving and decelerating.
- click noise that is speed depentant.
- More on the left side.
Had both axels replaced. Noise gone.
Rockauto sells them.

Thanks, that was (or still is) my original assumption as well (an Axle CV joint going out) so ended up removing the right-rear wheel to inspect callipers, parking brake, dust shield, etc. could not find anything wrong -at least visually-

While I was doing that, I tried to test the CV joint and grabbed the axle and tried to rotate back and forth, however, in the process, I "pushed" it towards the differential and it slide-in about 1 inch. I could not replicate the noise so decided to put the wheel back. I did not expect anything to change but surprisingly the clicking noise was gone (!) it was puzzling but it was gone.....at least for a few weeks (WTH?) as is now back.

Now the clicking noise goes on/off, some days is there, some days is not.......although I expect to be related to the Axle(s) and have that planned to replace in one way or another, the nature of it disappearing for a few days is very strange. Also, it sounds now when braking --which before it did not--

It was similar with my car.
Lifted it up and the noise was gone for a couple of days.
Allways came back.
Clicking when braking also.
There is no way i think to have the axels tested while in the car.

You guys are likely moving the grease around so that some gets into the joint and makes it quiet until the grease works it's way out again. Does it look like grease has been leaking out of the boots?

Good point; had not thought about it.....it could be a reasonable explanation.
I did check the boots to see if it was tell tale but the boots looked fine
Thx
