A Tale Of (Two) Three Indies & A Dealership – Finale Finally!!!
We left our tale with the E70 in the shop of indy #2. I dubbed him “I’m just about to…” because for a period of five long weeks that was all he told me; what he was about to do. On six occasions it was the exact same task. As I was not paying the bill I held my fire but at the start of week six I called indy one and asked him when the clown was actually going to look at the car. He EXPLODED! He called indy two and told him to get it ready as a flat bed was on the way to pick it up. __________________
That duly happened and indy three entered the game. Vehicle was diagnosed a week later with a broken ring(???) cylinder 6. This may or may not have been correct but it did prompt indy one to call me and tell me a replacement engine was needed. He spent a week trying to get a good used, low mileage engine to no avail. Then he was directed to a specialist re-builder about 500 miles away. Re-built engine was ordered and then the check disappeared in the mail. Another lost week. Indy one had to wire the money and the engine build started. Two weeks or so later it was loaded on the truck and the weather let lose on us in this area with freezing fog and major snow. About a week and a half after the weather settled down again the engine was delivered and the swap process started. That entails a 37 man hours process during which every stupid thing that could happen happened. e.g. Original crank position sensor was leaking oil. BMW parts supplied a new sensor and it was fitted. It was faulty. Had to remove intake, starter etc. to R&R it. All the modules had to be realigned to each other and the computer expert had to do it twice. Engine was then fired up and sounded good but CEL was on. High Pressure Fuel Pump was only putting out 800psi. A new pump was ordered from local BMW dealer and fitted Friday 19. Engine was fired up and CEL was still on!! Turns out the injector numbers did not line up with the computer. Swap injectors around but CEL would not go away. So March 22 BMW got the car. March 24 I called BMW Service and was informed they had found a defective HPFP. Two new BMW parts ordered from local BMW dealer faulty. New pump was ordered and it was to come in the next day. I do not know just what problem BMW are having but March 25 and the pump was still to arrive and be fitted. When pushed the SA was tentatively optimistic it was the problem but… So the wait goes on. Finally! Monday March 29 I called the dealership and was told the vehicle had been ready since Saturday. They were supposed to call indy one, as he was paying the bill, and arrange pick up then call me. I called indy one myself about 45 minutes later and dealership was still to call him. He called and left a message. I called two hours later and dealership was still MIA. I was put on hold and indy one called in again. He came back about three minutes later and was not a happy camper. He had been told the total for the work. They tripled the cost of the pump and charged 5 hours for what his own techs take two hours to do. No mention of or apology for the faulty pump they sold him then charged him to replace. In other words typical $tealer. So we are leaving and supposed to pick up the car this afternoon. We had to look at pictures to remember just what it looked like. I hope my wife remembers how to drive it has been so long LOL. Pick up completed. At last we have both our cars in the garage after 5 months.
