Air temperature charge sensor replacement on diesel.

Hello,
I’m visiting from the e53 board and I’m helping a friend. She has a 2010 e70 diesel which requires replacement of the air charge temperature sensor located at the intake air line. After a quick check it looks to me like the sensor clicks in to that line but I cannot find anywhere how to remove it. If anyone has replaced it I would greatly appreciate any hints.

I no longer own the 35d that I had for years, so I can't go and look under the hood. But I do remember replacing it years ago and it wasn't all that difficult.



I looked up the part on realoem.com - see this link. The temp sensor is part #15. Note that part #17 is a "twist protector." So I think - but am not certain - that the twist protector has to be removed first. Then I think the air temp sensor is rotated like 90 degrees and then it slides out. At least that is what I think I did many, many years ago!



Of course, I could be wrong. Sorry I can't be more helpful.

An intake air inlet temperature sensor is but OP is talking about the charge air temperature sensor. There's like four air temperature sensors throughout the intake on the M57.

Thank you guys for your responses. All the parts arrived yesterday including the one extra twist protector that I had ordered so I would have a spare. When I looked at my friends
Vehicle previously, it looked like someone had already damaged the twist protector. I could basically turn the sensor just about all the way around. I would like to confirm with you, to unplug the sensor, I need to pull and completely remove the little insert (light gray in color) in the connector before I can disconnect it?

Would need to see a picture to give a better answer, but for most of the Bosch/BMW connectors it is a 2 step process to disconnect/re-connect. Most have a white or grey lever that 1) needs to be pulled back, then 2) pressed down, then the connector can be pulled out. In rare cases pressing the lever doesn't lift the locking tab enough to allow disconnection - in that case one can slip a small screwdriver or pick under the locking tab and lift/pry it up to allow disconnection.


When re-connecting, the locking tab slides up and over a tab (when you hear the click), and "locks" the connection together. Then the white or grey lever is pressed back in (ie, toward the junction of the connector and the sensor) to once again make disconnection a 2 step process.

See post #159 in this link for some pictures. Obviously a different connector, but process should be the same.

When my charge air tube (#15) went bad, I had to cut it apart to remove the sensor (#12). The sensor is not designed to be removed once inserted. But if the sensor has failed, you can break it apart to get it out. You probably will need to remove the air tube to safely do this. Inspect the air tube for cracks at the bellows. Pull on the rubber parts as the cracks may be hidden when not under pressure. They fail around this time and you don't want to put a new sensor in a soon to fail air tube.

Hello, just an update. Yesterday I looked at my friends X5 again and I unplugged the temperature sensor as per the tip provided by sgrice to see post #159. That worked. I cleaned the connector with electrical cleaner, then I removed the charge line from the intake, and i used MAF cleaner on the charge temperature sensor to clean the oil off. The bellow does have some small cracks and I’ve recommended to my friend to replace the air charge line. Now I’m trying to help her find one at a reasonable price - any recommendations would be appreciated.
