im not sure but the benefits of diesel are overrated
assuming $2.20 for gas and $2.50 for diesel as of today avg prices and 15000 miles/year (1 imperial gallon = 1.2 US gallon) UK advert says diesel gets 32.5 imperial gallons which is 27.1 mpg (not same as US city/hwy but good enough for comparison) and the regular gas 3.0 gets 25.9 imperial gallons = 21.6 mpg diesel cost per mile is $2.50/27.1 miles = .092 per mile gas cost per mile is $2.20/21.6 miles = .102 per mile multiply by 15000 miles or however many you drive per year... $1380 for diesel vs $1528 gas... roughly $148 savings per YEAR i don't think that is worth hunting for diesel stations...

UK advert also states that the 4.8i gets 22.6 imperial gallons which is 18.8 mpg
that is significantly below the gas 3.0i mileage of 21.6 mpg might want to make some US customers re-evaluate the benefit of the V8

If there was a E70 diesel available I wouldn't hesitate a second to get one, well of course with reasonable price. I've driven both ML 320 CDI and E53 X5 3.0D and they have a lot better performance than any 3.0i and I don't believe 3.0si can meet it either. And by performance I mean every day driving on FW, how fast the car accelerates from e.g. 40 to 70 and how strong it is towing a trailer. But yes, by comparing only the gas vs diesel price and costs per year it doesn't make sense to buy a diesel... but, the torque of diesel

on my 05 3.0ds i have not changed the consumption since i drove it out of the dealers 16 months ago and it is reading an average of 24 impg.
if i fill up and drive straight to the motorway and drive between 80-100 it will read about 32impg. i had a x3 3.0i petrol before the x5 and that was averaging 19impg. but the torque over petrol is great and that turbo wine.

here on philippine traffic, my x5 3.0d 218hp version gets about 6km per liter. A liter of diesel here cost around 0.70usd. 6km per liter is already acceptable since my 1.8 liter corolla gets around 7km per liter hehe
 . That's how bad philippine traffic is!

I live in Midtown Atlanta and have no problem seeing plenty of stations with diesel! Now that the EPA is finally mandating low sulfur diesel fuel there is no excuse for us not to have them except for BMWNA's intransigence. Even the CARB is having to admit there may be something good about modern diesel technology in spite of the hex that GM put on diesels 25 years ago.
