Tailgate problem?

I swear someone else wrote about this problem here but I just spent a half hour reading through threads *and* I used the search feature and can't find it so I apologize if this is repetitive.

Last evening, the trunk on our 4.8i wouldn't latch. After several attempts, it finally latched. Today, there is a warning light that says that the tailgate it open but when we check it, it's latched.

It's going into the dealer tomorrow but if you have any insight as to what might be causing this, it would be a huge help! Thanks!

when you close the trunk, its not actually fully closed but there is also another small magnetic thing that pulls the trunk in and close it shut. im guessing that magnetic part in your car isnt working properly.

Yup, it's called "soft close"

Oh no!!! Our 2001 4.4 has had this problem since new. Over 15 (I'm not kidding) attempts to fix it. I think now they finally have- I hope I don't have to go through it again!

Interesting, the soft close in the model in the showroom did not work either.

Well, it magically went away. Thanks for the info, jcreed.

I really hope this isn't an ongoing issue like it was for you, Cairns!

A friend of mine slammed my tailgate, which made the automatic latching feature not work. The tailgate light stays on and I have to slam the tailgate closed. This caused the panning and backup lines to longer work on the rearview camera. When I took it in for service, they replaced the bowden cable and had to order a new lock which will take two weeks to arrive. I wish there was a way to disable the annoying message which appears everytime I come to a complete stop.

Somehow I wonder if this is the reason why the auto tailgate option is delay till fall 2007 for the E70.

Thanks for the info, chaseatl. Sounds like a real pain. This could be a possibility because we are coming from a Chevy Suburban whose tailgate HAD to be slammed so we will need to do some adjusting. We haven't had it happen since that initial problem and the warning sign has gone away. Hopefully there will be no further problems but we'll have to watch it closely.

Mazin- that's an interesting thought but I'm not sure if it would tie directly together or not?

I know have a similar problem as the soft close is not working and the trunk open warning keeps coming on. They replaced the lock and this did not fix the problem. They have now put in a PUMA report as they do not know what is wrong. I believe that soft close is still not working after this repair. Does anyone know what will fix this problem. I am hoping someone has already gone thru this and knows the answer.
