I know its not what you wanted to hear but I just did a trip up the coast in my E53 3.0d and averaged 7.5 l/100km (32 mpg)!
I best you guys can't wait for the diesel!

I have the 3.0 and am up to about 1,800 miles. I am averaging 17.2 MPG. My daily commute is mixed city/highway a little more heavily slanted toward the city portion.

3.0 with 1200 miles. Avg 18.8mpg in Cincinnati. Primarily highway miles

4.4 here - 20mpg short runs and town. Recent long drive 22-23mpg. (cruise on a lot)
