X5 alarm question

I was wondering when is the alarm supposed to go off. I tried to open the door without the key I thought the alarm should go off. Is this true? Because the alarm in my car is not going off when I try to pull the handle without the key.

For the alarm to go off the door has to be opened, just moving the handle will not set it off. Here's a link to a detailed explanation of the system.

Thanks for the clarification. I found on page 34 of the owner's manual it states that "The vehicle alarm responds when a door, the hood or the liftgate is opened" I wasn't sure if it was just pulling the handle should cause the alarm to go off or if the door has to be opened. Thanks for the clarification
