try pricing both out with the same options you want on the BMW NA website. A lot is already included with the 4.8 that is an option in the 3.0 (so will have to select those on the 3.0 to compare apples to apples).
When i did this, my price diff was far less than $10k. Still haven't made up my mind if I want to buy one though 9but that's a different issue). |

Hi Longtran, welcome to x5world. I'm also a member over at e90post and I bought my painted reflectors from you a few months back for my e92. I'm sure others will chime in too on the differences, but you may want to go drive both engines. I have a 4.4 e53 and the 4.8 seemed like a nice transition, but couldn't get myself to like the 3.0 engine much. I've driven both new engines on the SC track a few months back (both with sport pkg) and I thought the power difference was really significant, plus the deeper growl of the 4.8 was nicer.
Other differences include black grill on 3.0 and titanium on 4.8, graphite trim available on 3.0 only, and autoleveling on 4.8.

Depending where you are in CA you I would drive both power plants. The X5 is more weight and I opted for the 4.8 for it's torque. The sound is a nice bonus. Since the option price list is different for some options for each model you need to play with it.
For a sedan a turbo six sounds great but I am very happy with the 4.8. Comming from a turbo they do not exactly sip gas either. |

I think either powerplant works fine for most people. Obviously the 4.8 is more beastly. However, it does suck up gas at about a 10% greater rate. So the you should consider that it the cost difference. I know some don't consider 10% a big difference but at 'just' $3.00 a gallon, that would save you 30 cent per. I bet most people would go out of their way for this kind of discount. Also, your insurance rates may be a bit higher with the bigger engine. Again, not necessarily a 'big' issue, but something to consider.
Bottom line, play with the features you want and you'll see the actual cost difference for the purchase. Then add the secondary cost such as gas, insurance. Then the secondary 'fun factors' such as greater power and 'better' exhaust note (I personally don't think it's better but many do) and you'll have to weigh your decision from there. You can't go wrong with either choice overall there isn't that much of a difference, one is slightly more 'fun' (if you drive in such a style to take advantage), the other one is more 'efficient'. Both are great.
