Even if you're on a day off, don't go into a place with $50k+ cars wearing a wife-beater... is what I'm saying. I'd look at you sideways and I'm not a salesperson.
I thought you meant one of the tee shirts with the tux printed on it, sorry.

RE the wife-beater shirt: unless your buying a pick-up its not recomended.

It'd help if you were wearing 15k rolex with you t-shirt So far, the only M6s I've seen around here were driven by asians so in itself it's not a decisive factor

Hey delirium:

There are some advantages to the profiling thing, (At least in this case) When your in the skin I'm in; like you said; many time people will not say very much as i walk around the grounds looking at what's on hand. It's an advantage in my view because I get to walk around without have a snarling salesman hound me. Funny how that works cause folks will trail me thru a furniture store but not at a BMW dealership.

But here's just a suggestion. Don't take it personally. If you have the means to buy use their ignorance to your advantage. Let them think you can't afford it if they wish. (Good for you) When it's time to wheel and deal use that as part of your arguement. Mr. salesman, just look at me, you can tell i don't have a lot of cash so your just gonna have to make me a good deal.

Hey...ya gotta learn how to flim flam just like they do. But above all keep a posttive humble attitude and don't let em see you sweat. It's a game learn the rules and play to win.

Have fun.

If the first words you really said to that sales person were "I would like to test drive the x5 4.8" I don't really know what other reaction you would really expect. Put yourself in the shoes of the sales person....they have probably been trained from day one to ask those kind of questions in response to that statement. All they were trying to do is work out if you're a serious customer.

If you ran a car dealership and your sales staff gave a test drive to every person that asked for one straight up would you be happy with it? They have to try and work out if you're a serious customer. Why didn't you arange to test drive a 4.8 when you found the 3.0 to be lacking in power on the original test drive, wouldn't that have been easy to do?

The only time I wasn't offered help was in one of MB dealerships but as soon as I asked for it, the guy came up right away and was very helpful. In fact, I even liked it cause they didn't seem to pressure you on anything.
I thought I was the only one!
Last September, I walked in to Calgary BMW with my dad on a Saturday with a blazer and a good pair of pants on(I still don't think your attire should matter). The guy totally talks me down (I would like to test drive the x5- "4.4 or 3.0?", the 4.4 please- "uh,, Are you sure?") Finally we get in the car and he is lecturing my dad about the car and how it breaks in a straight line from 100km/h saying "this is what you are paying for". I told him I would also like to test drive a sedan and he says, "uh, guys you know what I'm really busy right now" wow, that was it, we left the dealership right than the there. Past June I get a phone call from another guy at the same dealership kissing my ass saying, "Hi MR.(so on so) this is (the name) calling from the Calgary BMW how are you today? we just got 20 E70's here on the lot and we would like to supply you with one. when can you come in?" I just thanked him and told him I was very busy for the next two weeks. I think by two weeks I meant 'I'm going to Edmonton to buy one thank you very much". Not sure if the first guy still works there; though, i have a strong feeling that he still does.

Oh! about the MB dealerships, I LOVE THEM. No matching models to your attire and totally no pressure. They have never ever failed to offer help right away and have never put any kind of pressure. A BMW dealership with the MB dealers in it would make my life.

I would have to agree that you need to come in with your ducks in a row--if you indeed plan on buying. People get dressed up to shop at Nordstroms for a $100 shirt---that is a simple purchase compared to $70K. I'm not saying it's right but unless you know the salesman he will ask questions to see if you are interested. It's kind of like an interview--put some effort into what you are doing. Hollywood is an exception I would think about being able to wear sweat pants to a dealer.
