well ... another update.
turns out it wasn't the CAS.

they are replacing the sifter module/shifter switch ... the whole thing. i thinks it's a complete unit with the shifter and whatever's below it.

they are also replacing a megatron i was told which a bmw tech advised that they should.

they have the shifter module thing already. they are awaiting the megatron as that's coming directly from bmw somwhere else.

friday will be 2 wks and counting.

2 weeks without a brand new X5 is just brutal. I have one word for this.

COMPENSATION!

"Megatron" ? I feel your pain though ... we got our X5 back today. It sounds like a very very similar problem to you, they first replaced a fuel injector pump (made no difference) then replaced the "main control module" (?) which fixed it.

Do they not have any X5's in the showroom? Or any demo vehicles? Demand they take the part from that and fit it in yours. Then when the new part comes, they can fit that in the vehicle they took it from. I'd be at the dealer kicking and screaming like a little child insisting it's fixed once they know what the problem is. Waiting for a part is just unacceptable - somewhere there will be one, even if they have to courier it from the factory by jet fighter!

main control module happens to be the same thing they told me.
they showed me a picture and it's the whole gear stick and it's assembly.
they have that part already.
for some reason they said the tech that flys all over told them to also change the megatron. i have no clue what that is and quite franky it sounds ridiculous.
