Cheers,
Actually I think we in the US have a dipstick too but it's so easy to check it in the I Drive system.

On the 4.8 motor it's right behind the engine oil filler cap which is on the front of the right side valve cover.

Same thing happened to me last Sunday and I just bough Mobil 1 at Kregen and added in. I had an appointment today for the Recall so asked my SA why was the engine oil level low? She said because the 4.8 is a big engine and it is normal to burn more engine oil.
When I checked the oil stick I did see the engine oil was somewhat darker than normal so I also requested them to perform the Oil Change (cost $118.85 including CA tax)

BMW uses Castrol synthetic not Mobil 1. Supposedly it's a special blend made for BMW (don't know about that) but when I had my dealer add a quart the container said Castrol synthetic and BMW. I keep a quart of the dealers Castrol oil in my car so I can add it myself if necessary.
The size of the motor has nothing to do with how much oil it burns, it's not necessarily a bad thing to burn some oil as long as it's not excessive and a quart every 7,000 or 8,000 miles is not excessive.

BG624: Thanks for the information.

Regards to Castrol and Mobil 1, BMW actually used Mobil 1 before, but I guess contracts or whatever they call has been switched to Castrol. Personally I think Mobil 1 is better, but Amsoil is far superior to both Castrol and Mobil 1. Just wanted to share the information to everyone.

Totally agree re. Mobil 1 and Amsoil. I thought it was interesting that the Castrol quart container at the dealer said BMW on it.
Probably just marketing BS but I would rather use the factory fill.
