Possible semi-solution...

By accident I just noticed that the seat belt clip easily holds to the inset base where the belt comes out of the b-pillar (see pic). It almost seems that it is magnetized to hold the clip. I've been driving with the passenger clip in this position for 2 days over 150 miles and it has stayed in place.

You'll have to learn to put in place each time you remove your seatbelt. Still not ideal, but resolves most of the issue.

We'll see how long it lasts.

I just do not think that's practical, since the damage comes from just the normal action of removing the belt and letting it retract out of the way. In reality, if I was just to gently ease the seatbelt into place as I removed it, it would never damage the trim and this would be about the same effort as what you show in the pic. Why should we have to do this on a 50-75K BMW, but it's not a problem on my Chevy or Honda?

Ok, good point. But replacing the b-pillar cover, once beat up, is much cheaper than say not learning how to sit properly into an E46M3. I've had to adapt to all my bmws to reduce wear and tear.

Jeremy

doesn't seem worth it!!

velcro or some other material to wrap the metal piece may be better!!
This is true. I bought a set and they are worthless in the X5. Appear to be made for a vehicle with a much lower seat back. FYI, you can take the headrests off the front seats if you care to try using these. The instructions are in the manual.

we had this problem with a tobacco interior. dealer replaced the b pillar trim and added a 'button' to the seatbelt that keeps the buckle away from the pillar during retraction.
