2007 3.0si engine valve train noise?? 9k miles
Anyone have intermittent noise at start-up, goes away after approx. 10 minutes? happens about 1/month about 3 months after purchase...sounds like when valves are not adjusted/no oil.

Valva Train Noises on 3.0 X5
The noise is due to design flaw of the oil pathways in the head. The solution in head replacement. Before the real solution is implemented ($), dealers will first purge the oil/lube system. This is a known problem and you have to be persistent. http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum...1#post15197811 This from another forum.

Thanks for the info/link. Now at 26k miles and still occurs occasionally...will pursue issue w/dealer.
Off subject, other problems experienced w/2007 X5 1. Parking brake actuated replaced (twice) 2. Rear wiper replaced (twice). 3. Rear passenger 3rd row seat handle latch broke, 4. Rear hatch latch intermittently does not want to stay locked...bolts also came loose...two missing. 5. Parking brake knob broke.

In two weeks I will be taking my 08 3.0 in for the second time re the valve noise. The dealer will be working with the BMW rep to determine what the next course of action will be.
Will advise when I know more. |

I had to take my car in twice for the exact same problem. The first fix was to bleed the system to extract any air pockets. The ticking stopped for about a month. When I brought it in again, they ended up replacing the head. The new head has an integrated check valve that allows easier oil flow to the lifters. It's been a month and still no noise. I did start getting a burning plastic smell through the vents from time to time and after 2 weeks of bringing it back and forth to the dealership, they finally figured out that the valve cover gasket needed to be replaced since oil was leaking.

Wow -- thread resuscitated after a year of inactivity -- thanks HolE39. I too have this problem and will look to the dealer to remedy...btw my warranty ends next October. Yikes, what a quick upcoming 4 years!
