Is this retrofit tv tuner available yet? and more importantly will it work come February 2009? Also what is a "DVB-T Settop Box" and how does it work?

She replied to me that the Retrofit TV tuner for the E70 is going to be available in April 2008. Right now they only have the DVB-T Settop Box, which you can only use if you already have the factory installed TV Tuner. So it looks like I'm going to wait until April 2008 and hope that the OEM BMW TV Tuner retrofit kit works in the US like the old E53 one used to.......and that it would be plug-n-play like the old one. If there is a need for the dealer to do any coding to activate it then this would mean trouble as the US dealers would have no clue how to do that.

Just stumbling on this. DVB stands for digital video broadcast and pertains to a european video broadcast standard. It has no relation to the USA digital <HD> broadcast, and therefore is not compatible whatsoever.

Regardless, the BMW x5 along with all new BMWs use MOST as the databus to communicate all video/audio components. As such, all MOST based nodes on the bus require coding to function correctly. USA vehicles do not allow for the TV tuner, so therefore cannot be coded.

So ... to summarize, the TV tuner is not compatible with USA digital broadcasts, and on top of that, you can't even code the tv tuner for USA vehicles.

This is an E70 thread and I have no experience with TV tuners for that X5. For the E53 X5 the analogue only tuner works perfectly in the USA. In any case, the reason for my post is that I want to get a hold rodybmw to have him ask his BMW AG source some questions I have.

Err ... OK, but I answered your question regarding what DVB stands for, and compatibility of the TV tuner for the E70 in USA cars.

My X5 came with the TV option, but I only get about 10 channels and they is too much static so nothing is visible and audio is minimal. Anyone know a fix for this?

They also have a DVB- T top box whatever it is. I think its some sort of satellite receiver from BMW, and it had a bigger external antenna and could get 5 Pay TV channels as well as read smart cards

I do appreciate the answer so thanks. I posted the question almost a year ago and since then did figure it out myself. So the point of my bump was to get a hold of that guy. Still waiting...
