I don't have an X5, but my iPhone works perfectly in both the M5 and 550i. The iPhone is on firmware 1.1.2.

I didn't. I tried completely deleting contacts and then typing them in again on the iPhone. I think this is working, but I've only done it on my most common contacts. Otherwise, there are a lot of contacts with just the area codes.

Do you use Leopard in your Macbook? The problem might be due to a bug in Leopard.
I use my Address book from my Powerbook G4, iPhone 1.1.1 SIM free hack version, and it works flawless.

Maybe it's Leopard, I don't know. I just got my X5 and already had Leopard installed on my MBP. My iPhone is running 1.1.2 but I can't imagine that's making a difference.

Well, many users report that they have no issue with iPhone integration, so your problem cannot be related to a general incompatibility of the systems, it seems to be rather some kind of an incompatibility between versions of the 3 systems involved:

- BMW firmware
- iPhone firmware
- address book in Leopard, that is pretty new

For what it is worth, I am using Leopard with all the latest patches and my iPhone with all the latest patches. My X5 was delivered in late October 07. I have paired 3 different BT cellphones and none have had any difficulty whatsoever. If you can try to pair another BT phone (and it fails) that might tell you that the problem is with the X5. My hunch is that the problem is with the X, not the phone.

solution found

my contacts in i figured out the issue. in my gmail contacts i have numbers listed at
415.555.555.

apparently the sync doesn't like numbers separated with dots even
though mac address book redispplays them properly at (415) 555-5555.
(i'm doing the gmail->plaxo->mac address book->iphone deal)

numbers that are listed 4155555555 or 415-555-5555 work fine. now off
to updating my 500+ conta

I saw some people with a similar problem on their '07 335 ( http://www.bmwcca.org/node/10417).

Thanks.
I have the same exact problem on my 08 535xi. What firmware is on your iPhone? I am using 1.1.3 and that appears to be the source of the problem.

Thanks! I have confirmed this resolves my issue. I've retyping in all my phone numbers as 415555555. Seems all the ones I did with a . are a problem. Very odd, you'd think when sync'ing to the iPhone it would do the right thing.
