Makes the two of us...I will utlimately do it but thought there might be some good "to knows" prior to doing it...my thinking is there are either cut outs or flaps below the engine area where one with be the drain plug just look for th pan, and the other will be the filter element - never did a BMW so this will be a learning experience. Not sure if its just unscrew filter remove element and replace o-rings and back in or if theres anything additionally that needs to be done.

I just ordered and received 5 Mann German oil filters for the E70 from autopartswarehouse.com (~ $10 apiece). From my last dealer oil change reciept, the 3.0si takes 7 qts of oil. Picked up a case of BMW synthetic oil from the dealer for around $5.80 a qt. The washer for the drain plug comes with the Mann oil filter. So just drain the old oil and use the new washer on the drain plug, change the filter (it's right on top of the engine, take it out using an inside out plastic zip lock bag to avoid mess), add new oil (7 qts for the 3.0) and add some oil to the filter to prevent start up starvation. Make sure you change the rubber gaskets on the filter insert (they come with the filter). Too bad there isn't a dipstick. On my Z3 I use a topsider vacuum system and drain the oil without going under the car. On this beast you'll have to go underneath.

Appreciate the input...do you or anyone on the board know if the 3.0 and the 4.8 both have top side oil filters?

It should look something like this. A 36mm socket takes the top off, at least that's what I use on the E36, haven't checked the E70 yet. The filter is underneath. Hope this helps.

Hi, nynd,

Have you had any luck changing your own oil/filter?

I'm planning to do mine but have never done it before on any car. Plus I don't have any tools either (don't know what sized tools I need).

I searched the forum and found some resources but I'm still unsure and not confident at all to go ahead.

Can you give me some pointers based on your experience? Mine's '08 3.0si. Thanks!

FYI. The oil filter for the '08 X5 4.8 is underneath the engine in close proximity to drain plug. Easily accessible through opening (no flap on mine). Sorry, I don't remember the socket size on the filter housing.
