About 18.5-9 city, 22-23 freeway, 89 octane. 2,700 miles on 3.0, 08 x5. I'm hoping it will also improve with mileage.
I decided not to wait for a diesel. There wasn't enough difference in gas mileage in the diesel, besides I read it would actually be a new engine (in order to meet CA emissions as explained in another thread and I didn't want to be an early adopter) and the cost of diesel gas is now of course out of sight. |

I have a 4.8 and just got 19.7mpg on a 1200 mile trip to Toronto and back from Boston. I drove at 70-85 most of the way. Had to slow down to get through customs. Driving around town in a suburban setting I avg. 16-17mpg. And yes I do use the power but don't treat every stop as a drag race.

On my 3.0d Sport i get around town 22-23 - motorway 26-27 when we drove through France to North Spain with a 27foot 1.5ton Caravan on the back, 2 adults/2children and a fully laiden roof box and boot - cruise control most of the way at 60-70mph, We averaged 25.9 displayed.....fantastic....and there are some steep hills we went up too.
And we left everything else that was towing (and motorhomes) standing when we just left her in cruise going up the hills.

since delivery I have averaged 9.8 L/100 km and thats with the odd hammering here and there. Avg speed thus far is 55.7 km/h and consistently getting 830 to 880 kms between fill ups.
On the highway travelling around 110 km/h the consumption gauge hovers around 8 L/100km and cruising at 60 to 70 km/h it gets down to 5 to 6 L/100 km Certainly a big improvement over the previous X5 diesel and I believe at least 5 L/100 km on average more fuel efficient than the 4.8i. I know of one 4.8i owner who has similiar average speed to mine (around 55 km/h), drives at mainly highway speeds and averages 15.6 L/100km without hammering. Go with the 4.8i if you like the sound of a V8 and dont mind the fuel bills. I wouldn't bother with the 3.0d when the 3.0sd is available. Diesel may cost more than fuel but they run much cooler and at lower rpms than petrols. In my previous BMWs that were petrols I could take a short trip and after coming back, open the bonnet and it would be damn hot under there.
