In windy winter conditions (i.e when a cold front just comes thru in the winter), this area tends to get strong NW winds around 15-25mph. This is enough to require steering corrections on any car I've driven at highway speeds. |

I feel it too. it's just the way the car is designed, not an issue.
If you don't own an E70, please don't comment in this thread. You guys are confusing everyone.

i'm running non-sport... and i haven't noticed any "shoving around" at highway speeds (and i never do less than 70mph)
very stable, even in the rain with some wind... no howling either... then again, eventhough it's winter here... cold, windy weather hasn't really hit us yet! test the wheel alignment.... on a completely straight and somewhat bumpless/potless road, drive for a few seconds, take your hands off the wheel and brake slowly...(don't slam on it) see if the vehicle steers heavily into one direction... note: depending on the roads imperfections it will steer slightly off-center.. but concentrate on the "immediate" steering... i believe you would also experience vibrations on the highway if you really had issues with wheel alignments.

Cross-wind impact is definitely more noticable in my wife's MB SUV than the X5.

I would say that my E70 is more stable in wind that my MB E Class sedan was.

I have the same vehicle. 2008 4.8i, sport package w/ 19" wheels.
I have driven 2,000 or so miles at 'highway' speed (65 to 80 mph) under varying wind & weather conditions & have never experienced what you describe. My X-5 is 'rock solid' & feels planted to the road surface. I think you need to have yours checked out by your service department, sounds like something is wrong to me!

If you can feel the crosswind while driving, it is not slight. Been driving SUVs for 14 years now. It's normal on a tall car to feel a jolt sometimes - think about all the times you don't feel it - how would you know the difference that it's stable one time and not another?
As far as making it sway side to side... is it making you adjust once back to your lane or are you really fighting the wheel left and right to get back straight?

true, I was just offering up anecdotal info on a nearly 7 yr old car...
I realize they are not the "same" car...the OP read like he was possibly surprised at the diff between an SUV and his other reg. car. I haven't gunned an E70 down the road in crosswinds; I doubt it performs less than/crummier/worse than, an 8 year old design. Something is amiss with his E70 or, he is sensitized and not used to high profile rides.
