i'm having my windscreen replaced at the moment under insurance before I dispose of the car. The cost to do this is AUD$1200 but my policy allows one free replacement each year. A consecutive replacement within the same year will attract a AUD$500 excess.

Hi Mi5,

That's same for me, but I am not sure whether they would let me get away with the screen cost because of the heads up display screen costing more. Have not read the fine print but they may have a $ limit on it.

I wish I was that lucky. I've had to replace the windshield on each of the 4 cars I've owned - always due to an errant rock or other road debris. But they never cost more than US$300-400, even on my Audi S4 (B6). $1000+ is pretty steep.

I'm an F-15E pilot and HUDs are a godsend - it'd be cool to have one in my car too. Alas, I think I'll pass on it. Now I'm going to read the thread about the Premium HiFi and decide on ordering that... Decisions, decisions.
Yeah, the HUD in the X5 definitely needs a gun piper and boresight.

There is one option that I would have really liked to be available in the X5 and that is the Night Vision.
about the HUD in the M5, but I read somewhere the BMW Night Vision isn't that great. It's more of a thermal vision option and you have to look at the nav display which in my opinion isn't comfortable. I think the MB S class night vision is a lot better, because you see the screen in the dash.

The MBZ S-Class nightvision is awesome!! the bmw nightvision is like old nv technology in comparison.

not that I am replacing my windshield for X5 with HUD , but sh** happened. It happened to my wife car 2 month ago. Just like to let future X5 owner know what will it cost for a windshield replacement. x5 windshield with HUD cannot be REPAIRED. It must be replaced. http://www.xoutpost.com/attachments/x...g?d=1180837909

It is a double layer windshield specially for HUD. I don't think there is a aftermarket replacement for it. I would take it to the dealer if I need service to the windshield.

A Strike Eagle driver eh? After flying one of those, driving any mortal motor vehicle must be like riding a bicycle...

Flying is a rush that's for sure. I've been doing it for years and I still love every minute of it - especially those early morning sorties. It's a lot of work but the instantaneous and long term rewards are innumerable. However, I must say I still love getting in the car after a long week, turning up the radio and opening the sunroof. Too bad I have to deal with speed limits on the ground!

I like your use of the term 'driver' - you must work near or with pilots, not everyone knows that's what most military pilots call ourselves. Along with 'nose gunner,' or just plain old 'dumb pilot'.'
