You're right, there is no such thing as dustless pads. However, the ceramic compound pads made by Hawk, Axxis, EBC, and others produce considerable less dust. More importantly, the dust they do produce is light grey to white in color, not black like the organic OEM pads. So the dust does not show up on silver wheels.

The size of the rotors or the weight have little to do with amount of dust. The main differentiator is the pad material.

The reason I want to change the OEM pad is I don't want to clean my wheels every day. The black dust is visable within a few miles after cleaning.

In addition I believe the oem pad do have some iron in the compound and I think this is the culprit that is causing rust stains and marks on the aluminum running boards from the dusting of the pads that some forum members are have been experiencing.

The frustrating thing is that organic pads don't have to be formulated to make the black dust, but BMW and others choose to use Carbon Black as a filler in the pads. It is only that fact which causes the annoying dust. Yes, carbon black does have decent thermal conductivity, but so do many other fillers.

TUV approved pads only. There is a reason no "dustless" pad has managed to get approval.

Have they tried? I understand why a pad manufacturer selling to an OEM in Germany would want a private certification like TUV. I don't understand why an aftermarket supplier would necessarily care whether they had TUV certification or not, given that it costs money, if they are outside Germany (or the EU). Certainly TUV as a private inspection service has a limited presence in North America and Australia, the homes of Axxis pads.

I think of TUV as a compliance tester, not a quality tester. If the question is whether a pad meets TUV specs, it is a good process and TUV certification certainly matters. I don't know that TUV is the exclusive holder of design and manufacturing quality rights though.

Do you have more information on TUV and their relevance?
