2009 X5 to get Google maps and Myinfo

Actually all BMWs by 2009 MY will have this service.

CONNECT YOUR DRIVE: BMW ADDS NEW "MYINFO" SERVICE FROM BMW ASSIST(TM) POWERED BY GOOGLE MAPS(TM)

Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey - April 11, 2008...Navigation systems have become even easier, faster and more convenient to use with the introduction of "MyInfo". This latest addition to the BMW Assist Safety Plan allows subscribers to send business locations and street addresses and their associated phone numbers found in Google Maps(TM), an innovative online mapping service, from the comfort of their home or office directly to their BMW.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MgTx9nUJfOc

Effective as of April 8 production of 2008 X6 Sports Activity Coupes equipped with the BMW Assist and Bluetooth® Hands-free calling System, customers will be able to call the phone numbers received with their Bluetooth connected mobile phone or, if their BMW is equipped with a navigation system, immediately start route guidance by a simple push of a button.

To use MyInfo, just search for a business or street address on Google Maps (http://maps.google.com) and click on the "Send" link at the top-right corner of the map. Select “Car”, then “BMW” and “BMW US” for country and enter your e-mail address on file with BMW Assist as your BMW Assist account name. You can add a personal note, if desired, then press the “Send” button – and your destination is on its way. Once inside your BMW, simply push the MyInfo button within the BMW Assist menu and you will find the desired destination and associated phone number.

Already popular in Europe and recently launched in Canada this unique service allows advanced preparation for your next trip. Before you leave the house or office, you can easily and quickly determine online the exact location of up to 10 of your desired destinations and then make them available in your BMW. The advantage is that the listings found at Google Maps no longer have to be written down or printed out. Also manual data entry into the navigation system is no longer needed -the address and phone number is already in your iDrive menu. Even better, you can share MyInfo with your family, friends and colleagues so that they can send destinations, phone numbers and even notes to the vehicle while you are on the road. But best of all, there is no charge for this service, as it’s included as part of the Safety Plan for the first four years, like the other benefits of Ultimate Service.

MyInfo will be included on BMW Assist-equipped X5, X6, 1, 3, 5, 6 and 7 Series, effective with Model Year 2009. For now it is an exclusive feature of the 2008 X6. The X6 Sports Activity Coupe will be offered in the USA in two versions. The X6 xDrive35i, sporting a 300hp, twin-turbo, inline 6 cylinder will be available at authorized BMW SAV centers on April 26th. The twin-turbo V8 powered X6 xDrive50i will come to the US market in the late summer 2008.

I hope that BMW is going to give us a way to retrofit this into the 2008 (and older) models!

When I currently am going somewhere that I want navigation help, I typically use Google Maps so I can get details and possibly do a print out or two. I look at the whole route. After all that, I then have go the car and go through all the menus to put in an address. And when I'm done, I have NO IDEA if the route will be anything like I saw on Google Maps!

BMW Navigation is currently lacking. This 2009 enhancement is moving in the right direction...

This sucks! In 2007 I waited a year to get an X5 because I wanted an auto-tailgate. I just placed an order for an X5 and now this great feature! Will the Nav be essentially the same except that you can send the info from a computer/cellphone text message and not have to re-input it in the nav?

Just curious. I've heard that ppl can call the concierge with BMW assist and have an address sent to them now. Can they just choose that destination now and not have to re-enter it into the nav?

I'd be pretty upset if MY2009 offers soft close doors.. or even worse the xDrive35i engine! All stuff that eventually should come to the US, but speculating at least not until the mid-cycle facelift. Which would justify getting into an X5 now.

I have BMW Assist, and I'm still trying to fathom it out,.. AFAIK because the car has a sim card in it, apart from the emergency button on the roof,.. you call up the service through idrive, where you get your details sent to an operator, who can advise you of the nearest service that you are looking for, he can send the location to the cars Nav system and you just start your guidance as normal,.. as I understand it. (fitted to a Sept 07 E70 car)

Wait a little longer, some euro BMW models have full internet access via i-drive.

I'd attach some pictures, but my patience runs out at 5 attempts. For whatever stupid reason they won't upload. Frankly I think the manage attachements thing on this site sucks.

There will always be newer and better features every year. It just depends how long you can hold out on a new X5. Frankly, if this Google Maps thing is not going to replace the NAVTEC disc completely, it's not a big deal. Soft-close is also not a big deal... though they're nice additions, they are not worth half-year waits to me. A new TT petrol engine, if true, is worth that wait but I bought mine in January so it would've still been almost a year wait and that was my biggest consideration then.

Oh, you know what else would be worth the wait? A better rear camera! (Thank you thank you, I'm here all week...)

Panic not - my 2007 E70 3.0d M Sport (UK Spec) has this MyInfo feature now - I can't see that there's much, if any, hardware to be changed!

All you receive is a phone number, text message or map coordinates after all! I believe the system uses the same installed mobile (cellular) technology and SIM card as BMW Assist (i.e. the SOS button, etc.) in any case....

Good point. There will always be newer and better. Just have to find our happy spot.

I doubt the US will see the internet in the front of the car in the near future though. We can't even drive with TV in the front. Though it may frustrate us good drivers, it's actually a good thing since there are a lot of bad drivers out there too.
