On a side, I was washing her a couple of weeks ago, with the key in the cupholder (this car has comfort access), and the car suddenly locked itself. This is the only time it has happened, had to unlock the car with the 2nd key.

Anybody had this happen yet?

Cheers,

Never.... as a matter of fact if the keys are in my pocket as I wash the car, the car would lock and unlock any time water touched the door handle. During the car wash, I put the key in the ignition.

Well if it's comfort access, having it in your pocket or in the cup holder would be the same thing. The car can potentially lock if the sensor/button on the outside car handle was activated. That's the way to lock the car, right? (Still waiting to get my X5, but figure it's the same as my other MB with keyless go).

You should be able to just open the door without needing to grab the second key since the car's ignition isn't on. Which begs the question: "If the car is running and you have your doors locked. Can an outside person open the door?" I'd assume no.

This seems strange to me. I tried to see if I could lock the door with the key inside the car....no joy for me. I think the sensor can tell if the key is inside or outside. And to someone's point, if it locked itself from the key being inside, you should be able to touch the handle and unlock it......Phil

.
Car can't be locked FROM OUTSIDE if key is inside as far as I know & experienced.
Different if you lock it with central lock button inside the car (e.g. by accident when cleaning the interiors) and close the door afterwards from outside...

the vehicle detects whether the key is inside or outside the cabin, so nah it's not the same thing cos he was talking about leaving it inside while he was outside washing it

the documented behaviour (and what I've seen so far) is that if you leave the key inside the car, the doors won't lock when you touch the door lock bit on the outside handle

the scenario that The Big Easy described sounds like a glitch
