I didn't think there was a dip stick on the E70.

Nope, no dipstick on 3.0SD or 3.0D.

Oil burn...

My 2008 X5 also burns oil. I had to add a little under a quart about a month ago (delivery was in December 2007). "BUT" I also drive my X5 as an everyday vehicle AND through the twisties in the mountains for fun (the way it should be driven). Maybe the harder you drive the X5 the more oil will be burned.

cmyX6go will become famous soon enough
I was down a quart today (just shy of 10,000 miles). I seem to be burning a quart every 5,000 miles.

What are you other 4.8 owners finding? I don't remember burning this much in my E53s. No big deal, I went to the dealer, he topped it off and I was on my way. Just curious.

Hi,
I recently drove my BMW X5 3.0 to the mountains(6,000ft) with temperatures at 13degrees Farenheit. All of a sudden, after parking my X5 for half a day in the cold, the "low oil" warning came out. The next morning it showed up again and disappeared in the afternoon. I manually checked the oil level but it seemed to have enough oil. I also had an oil change 10,000miles ago. Does the cold weather affect the oil reading??? I hope someone can help me out.

Thank You!

well obviously there is a dipstick.uhmmmmmm well maybe...,
I did not have a chance to look at it yet.
But I lived with the idea that the new electronic I-drive check equipped cars had no dipstick...... at least they said it about late E60

so is there a dipstick on E70 2008 diesel EURO ? )
can't check myself at the moment

Thanks for your replies. My BMW X5 3.0 does have a dipstick. I'm not sure on how to read it either. It's different from my Mercedes.
So, is it normal that the low oil level warning comes out?
Also, my service advisor told me an oil change is necessary only when the warning comes out which is about every 15k miles. Is this true?
