As per manual, the rack can hold up to 15 kg (~ 33 lb) per cycle rail, of which the rack has 2. There is nothing in the manual about tire size limitations.

Thanks for the info! I have a 'moderately' heavy 36 lb all-mountain bike with 2.55 tires, so it sounds like I am borderline as far as the rack goes.. Now I just have to find one locally for something closer to what some of you have managed rather than the $499 retail price on the BMW site.
