I think my 3.0 pulls strong from a complete stop especially when it hits the 2nd gear. But I do think downshift sometimes is slow to respond.

yup it was one of my complaints when I was deciding to buy. Comparing to my older, less hp/torque SUV it was still a huge lag difference and people mentioned the drive-by-wire stuff these days which contribute to it. I never considered it was actually starting in 2nd gear. I sometimes drive it in manual and always start on M2 because M1 is REALLY short anyway. If you let it downshift on its own as you're stopped, it doesn't go lower than M2 either.
Since you've mentioned it - you guys are right... it feels exactly the same so it definitely is in 2nd. I'm only at 2700mi. so hopefully this gets better, somehow.

I think that it all depends on how your right foot reacts...
I've found that a snappier right foot=performance that I would exspect... a slower mash type right foot=BMW being big brother, and protecting the drivetrain and preserving the fuel... Try to make quick throttle jesters.... not pedal travel, but try to mash 1/2-3/4 throttle faster.... I bet it goes like you would exspect... Supposedly it will eventually learn you... although I don't drive mine enough to say for sure if it "knows" me yet...

I can't use ds mode yet, as I'm still breaking-in.
![]() I believe that Mercedes-Benz's comfort mode starts in 2nd gear for smoother start as well. I heard that it used to be called winter mode since gentle start is crucial on the snow. The other choice is sport mode which starts in 1st. |

To make my point clear... My e46 M had a decal on the inner windshield, that explained "breakin" to the most mechanically DECLINED idiot... Whereas the X5 did not... even when asked to my sales rep....he knew nothing other than trying to stay below 4500 until 1500... Don't know about anyone else...but come maybe 1200, my tranny broke in the manual(tiptronic) mode..my tires' sidewalls were scuffed... Rev limiter touched upon on several occasions... I was floored honestly....not by power.... but damn this thing has claws for traction... it just won't let you screw up |

.....I thought the main reason that you do a break-in is to ensure that all the moving engine parts get thoroughly soaked in oil before you stress it with higher revs...not because there might be something "wrong" with the engine. I'm sure these modern BMW engines can take a top-notch beating from the get-go, but if I pay $70 K for something, I'm going to err on the side of caution.

Just drive in a aggressive manner until the tranny is trained to your driving style :]

I did see that Ford commercial showing the EDGE going faster than the X5 3.0. I'd say you're better off not expecting too much performance out of a 3.0... but what do i know, i've only got the 4.8.
