I have a new 3.0 and I'm experiencing some lag right off the line. Maybe it's normal given that it's a heavy vehicle and the displacement is only 3.0 liter.
I've been renting and driving a Hyundai Sonata 4cyl model and it's very peppy on a stop light. And even my previous vehicle, which is a year 2000 minivan is pretty fast taking off. But the X5 3.0 feels sort of slow to go from a complete stop. After pressing on the throttle, the vehicle starts moving slowly and I have to wait for about 2 to 3 seconds for the engine to come alive, pick up speed and be more responsive. It's not very sensitive to my throttle input, like sluggish off the line. It feels like I'm starting from a second gear, yeah, that's exactly what it feels like. Pressing fimrly on the throttle, say, three quarters full does help lower the lag, but it's still not fast; it's just enough to keep up with other traffic. Is this what you 3.0 owners are experiencing too? Am I just too used to a light vehicle like the Sonata that I've been renting? It's a lot better after picking up some speed though. |

I noticed a lag on my 3.0 when it was brand new. It started picking up at around 5K miles. I'm now at 12K and there's no lag at all.

I felt what you are talking about while test driving a 3.0. One of my justifications for getting a 4.8 instead. But the lag is nothing as bad as that in a MB E320.
I believe during a test drive the CA told me that the X5 does start in 2nd gear. (Can anyone confirm this?). He said that if I wanted to start in 1st, that I'd have to put it in DS mode instead. It actually makes sense because I find that the 4.8 is hard to start from a stop smoothly. You have to pay more attention to the amount of gas you give. Too much and the car feels like it downshift's into 1st gear and lunges forward! While in DS mode, it is much more responsive and smooth (more like the transmission in a 535i). What you can do is also try reprogramming the transmission. It tries to learn a person's driving pattern and make things smoother. Don't remember the sequence though. Do a quick search. |

my 4.8 does start on second. If you put it on manual and start from 2nd, you will confirm that the pull is the same as is normal D mode.

I noticed that mine was initially slower but after a couple of weeks of break-in it feels quicker off the line. |
